Wing it on over to see "Pelican Dreams."
In the eloquent, lyrical and beautifully photographed 'Pelican Dreams,' Irving acts as a comforting narrator as she explores our fascination with and concern for the plight of these seabirds that are so much a part of the Bay Area coastline.

Want to witness a master class in acting? See J.K. Simmons in "Whiplash."
Oscar-caliber performances from J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller are the highlight of what amounts to a psychological thriller -- with music.

Brad Pitt, a Sherman tank and director David Ayer make for a worthwhile team. The visceral "Fury" also features an outstanding turn from Shia LaBeouf.
David Ayers' WWII film has little plot to speak of, but it's effective nevertheless, as it places the audience directly in a Sherman tank, where we, too, experience the claustrophobia of those environs and the creeping madness of war.

Tired of downbeat movies? Lift your spirits with the British charmer "Pride."
http://www.mercurynews.com/movies-dvd/ci_26597007/review-pride-another-winning-british-crowd-pleaser
In the same vein of 'Billy Elliot,' 'The Full Monty,' 'Kinky Boots' comes 'Pride,' about how a group of gays and lesbians formed an unlikely partnership in the mid-80s with striking mine workers.

"This Is Where I Leave You" is quite enjoyable, and the cast couldn't be finer.
The dysfunctional family tale 'This Is Where I Leave You' does the ensemble dramedy right, successfully juggling a top-notch cast with the demands of its multiple characters.

It's Labor Day and the new movie releases don't look overly promising. Here are some under-the-radar gems to check out, many from the comfort of your own home.
In this season of discontent for many box-office minded studios, smaller indie films made a strong showing. And most can be found now whether in theaters, in DVD, on demand or streaming.

"Birdman" is one of 2014's best films. Prepare for something unique.
With a cast that includes Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis, this surreal head-tripper is one of 2014's most innovative movies, an energetic and exciting existential black comedy that's challenging yet accessible and wildly successful in the risks it takes.

Review: "The Book of Life" ranks as one of the best animated films of 2014.
The visually stunning children's film produced by Guillermo del Toro, 'Life' transports us to a Tolkien-sized world anchored around an annual tradition in the Latino world and affectionately illuminates the symbolic nature of the celebration that finds the living recalling and reconnecting with the dead.

Anchored by blistering performances from Rosamund Pike as a beautiful wife who goes missing and Ben Affleck as her prime-suspect husband, 'Gone Girl' is as mesmerizing to watch as the book was to read.

Review: "Pride" is another British winner; a moving charmer through and through.
In the same vein of 'Billy Elliot,' 'The Full Monty,' 'Kinky Boots' comes 'Pride,' about how a group of gays and lesbians formed an unlikely partnership in the mid-80s with striking mine workers.

Let the fall film season begin: "Gone Girl" anyone? You betcha. Here are the movies I'm most looking forward to in the months ahead.
Also on our hot list: 'Dear White People' 'This Is Where I Leave You' and 'Interstellar'

"The Hundred -Foot Journey" makes for a nice summertime dessert. Helen Mirren, Om Puri and Manish Dayal  are absolutely charming.
Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal and Om Puri are charming in a predictable but entertaining culinary dramedy set in France.

Introduction
I love movies, I love to write and I love to work out and help others get into shape. So I'm pursuing all these passions at once. I freelance movie reviews for the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune. And I'm a certified personal trainer, a TRX-trained instructor, and spin instructor. I'm a health coach and trainer at UC-Berkeley's RSF, Truve, and also work at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA. When I'm not watching movies, teaching, personal training, you'll likely find me out on my bike or running up hills.
