If Cowboys can’t beat Jags without Romo, they don’t deserve a W

The NFL scheduling gods smiled upon Jerry Jones. And he didn’t even notice.

Tony Romo’s broken back kept him out of Sunday’s loss to Arizona, but Jerry was gifted with the terrifically awful Jacksonville Jaguars for this London jaunt.

And what does he do? He packs Romo up on an airplane with plans to play him at Wembley on Sunday.

Conventional wisdom wasn’t even needed here. How about just plain ol’ common sense? Keep Romo off the field — dude, keep him off the trip — and order Brandon Weeden to hand it to DeMarco Murray 25 to 30 times, get the win, take a couple of pics, say hi to the Queen and head back to DFW and a bye week with a 7-3 record.

UT’s hall of honor a perfect spot for Dabbs

One fall day in 1973, a nervous Ken Dabbs drove his school-issued Ford to East Texas and knocked on the screen door of the rustic home at the end of Lavender Road outside Tyler.

Life for him — and a whole lot of other folks — would never be the same.

One of Ann Campbell’s 11 children answered the door and politely ushered in Dabbs, the 38-year-old assistant football coach at the University of Texas.

Horns fighting in-state perception battle with recruits

Losing a 2015 commitment isn’t exactly the way Charlie Strong wanted to kick off a big recruiting weekend. Sort of defeats the purpose.

Keivon Ramsey, a four-star defensive back from Converse Judson, told the recruiting website 247Sports on Thursday that he has backed out of his commitment to Texas.

Teenagers change their mind all the time, as hundreds more will do before signing day next February.

McCoy gives Texas volleyball a lift from libero position

It takes a certain mentality to play the libero position in volleyball, which is the last line of a team’s defense.

Some might say the role — whose main job requires getting in front of and getting up balls smashed at prodigious speeds and at crazy angles — requires a libero to have a screw loose and a tight mouthpiece. The fact that fifth-ranked Texas’ libero, Cat McCoy, is a freshman says a lot about her toughness, adaptability and ability to rise to the occasion.

Depth at key positions has been a boost

With their football seasons on the line, a few schools have sought a savior on their depth charts.

Vandegrift and Cedar Ridge have both relied on second-string quarterbacks over the past few weeks, and Stony Point started backup Tanner Aenchbacher in its regular-season finale against Pflugerville on Thursday.

Hendrickson’s Viegra joins area’s lead pack in boys cross country

Daniel Viegra entered his freshman year at Hendrickson more interested in playing baseball than in running, but as spring approached, he made a last-minute decision to join the boys track and field team.

Good call. He raced at 1,600 and 3,200 meters for the Hawks, posting top times of 4 minutes, 31 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:53 at 3,200 meters.

Longhorns back Malcolm Brown carries on during tough season

Texas running back Malcolm Brown grabbed a seat in the interview room the other day and waited.

A good 10 seconds of awkward silence passed before someone finally blurted out a question.

In this, his senior year, Brown is practicing patience.

Through his first eight games, he had not cracked 100 yards, a skid he was relieved to snap last week at Texas Tech.

Stars defenseman Klingberg piling up points, too

He’s a defenseman by trade, but John Klingberg always has been used to putting up points.

The Dallas Stars, intrigued by his offensive potential, drafted the smooth-skating Swede in the fifth round in 2010. Four years later, he’s proving the Stars brass right with a hot start in his first AHL season.

Klingberg, 22, is second on the Texas Stars with nine points (three goals, six assists) in nine games.
