American road trips: share your photos and stories

We were struck by the memorial to the people who fought and died in Korea. The men's faces look so real and haunting. You can't help but be moved.

On the Big Island of Hawaii you can drive right up to where a dried lava flow cuts off the road. A floating "road closed" sign that was captured by the lava is sort of superfluous now!

In 2009 we drove across the US from Boston to California via as many national parks as we could. We saw plenty of bizarre things but one of the strangest was Wall Drug - an enormous drugstore on Interstate 90 that was bustling with people despite being in a tiny town in rural South Dakota, surrounded by nothing but dust and fields. This store's history dates back to the 1930s - indeed the storefront looks like it's still stuck in those time - and it has become something of a rite of passage for road trippers in the US.

Wall Drug's selling point is the unlimited "Free Ice Water". The brainchild of the original owner's wife, this simple idea was what turned the struggling pharmacy that nobody stopped at into "America's Favorite Roadside Attraction" - the prospect of free ice water to motorists in the pre-aircon days was just too irresistible! Nowadays it is a huge labyrinth of tourist tat but somewhere in there the original pharmacy supposedly lives on. I didn't find it - I was too busy necking my free ice water!

Heading to Monument Valley

Took a couple of days out from San Fran in 2006 to drive south down Highway 1. The sense of isolation and peace with nature was something special I'll always remember.

I'm sitting on the exact point where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah come together -- my butt is in four states at once. Four Corners Monument is a Navajo Tribal Park, in an area they describe as "very remote, no running water, no electricity, no telephones." But there are food trucks.
