This is a video I recorded at January’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week* that I’m finally getting around to sharing. Following up on two excellent wind energy articles from Josh highlighting the low cost of wind energy, it seemed like a good time to finally share this.

Basically, despite a lot of hype contrary to the facts, wind energy is heavily supported by the public. People like wind power. Furthermore, the economic benefits of wind power are huge. Just two wind farms in Texas, for example, resulted in almost $2 billion in economic activity. Granted, they were big wind farms, but the point is clear: wind farms create jobs and local economic activity.

*Full Disclosure: My trip to Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week was hosted by Masdar, the host of the event. However, I had full control over the content I produced.

People only like wind power when they are built “somewhere else”, not in their own back yard.

    • Bob_Wallace

People tend to love wind if it’s built in their “yard”.

Wind is seen very favorable by those who lease land to wind turbines and those who live in towns that were dying but are now reborn thanks to the jobs, lease payments, and tax revenue wind farms bring to their area.

A lightly populated country like the US has plenty of places to put wind farms where it is windy and away from back yards.

I’m unsure why I would be opposed to one in my back yard. They are not densely packed, so maybe one or two would be visible from my house. Bring them on…..
