Preliminary results show about a third of Texas registered voters cast ballots in top statewide races Tuesday, a 5 percentage point decline from the 2010 midterm elections.

The Texas Secretary of State says nearly 4.7 million votes were cast in Tuesday’s governor race, 33.4 percent of the record 14.2-plus million registered voters.

That’s down from about 38 percent four years ago, when nearly 5 million Texans voted for governor out of 13.2 million registered voters.

This year, Republican Greg Abbott got more than 2.77 million voters Tuesday, almost 1 million more than Democrat Wendy Davis.

Excluding judicial races, the top statewide vote-getter was incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, who received about 2.84 million votes.

Land Commissioner candidate George P. Bush was second with about 2.81 million votes, followed by Abbott.
