Four University of Texas at Arlington engineering professors have been named charter fellows to the National Academy of Inventors.

UT Arlington civil engineers increasing energy created from solid waste
Two UT Arlington civil engineering professors are working with a new imaging system that has doubled the amount of methane gas produced by the city of Denton landfill. The landfill is the first in Texas to implement the Enhanced Leachate Recirculation system. The gas now provides power for about 1,500 Denton households. However, with increased efficiency of ELR operation, the system will be able to power 3,000 homes in the city of 117,000, officials said.

UT Arlington engineers working to prevent heat buildup within 3D integrated circuits
In the effort to pile more power atop silicon chips, engineers have developed the equivalent of mini-skyscrapers in three-dimensional integrated circuits and encountered a new challenge: how to manage the heat created within the tiny devices. But a team of UT Arlington researchers funded by the National Science Foundation is working first to minimize the heat generated and then to developing nano-windows that will allow the heat to dissipate before it damages the chip.

Imagine a human-like robot with skin and clothes embedded with sensors that could help machine accurately perceive the environment and better assist human owners. Such “smart” robots are at the heart of a new $1.35 million National Science Foundation project led by Dan Popa, a UT Arlington associate professor of electrical engineering. Popa is the principal investigator of a collaborative effort to advance robots and robotic devices, improve prosthetics and enable those devices to perform tasks that people can no longer do themselves.

The University of Texas at Arlington is adding a new Master of Science in Real Estate - Sustainability to its portfolio of sustainability-focused academic programs. Classes begin May 12 at The Universities Center in downtown Dallas and fall 2012 at the UT Arlington Fort Worth Center in downtown Fort Worth.
