100 Favorite Dishes, No. 8: Moules Frittes at the Grape

The sun was setting. Consider it mood lighting.
For last week's Best of Dallas® 2014 issue, we've been counting down (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes. If there's a dish you think we need to try, leave it in the comments, or email me.

Don't order the bistro-style mussels at The Grape, ever. The order is such a bore, and burdened with bread that will do little to inspire a magical evening. Keep scanning down the menu to the very next item and read it out loud: moules frites has a nice ring to it, yes? And french fries beat French bread nearly every time.

You can get mussels all over Dallas, and to be honest they're mostly coming from the same distributors. So when choosing a place to dine on mussels and French fries, consistent execution and romance are what you're looking for. You'll find them both at The Grape.

If the weather is even slightly agreeable a seat on the patio is the best option. There aren't too many neighborhood bistros with a patio that faces west like this one. You can almost drink that sunset and it seems to go on for hours, here.

But more likely you'll be drinking wine, or a nice crisp beer, and alternating sips with bites of fried potatoes dipped in garlicky aioli and mussels drenched in lemon, wine and herbs. This is one of those simple meals you can get lost in. It's one you should make at home but never seem to do. And thankfully, it's one you can rely on consistently, thanks to chef Brian Luscher.

IC the Grape fall menu has a sweetbread appetizer...........mmmmmm...

You drive me to confess in ink:
Once I was fool enough to think
That brains and sweetbreads were the same,
Till I was caught and put to shame,
First by a butcher, then a cook,
Then by a scientific book.
But 'twas by making sweetbreads do
I passed with such a high I.Q.

Anthony Bourdain wrote some unfavorable comments about mussels in general. I would hope they do not apply to the grape.
