Shell makes deepwater gas discovery in Gabon

HOUSTON — Royal Dutch Shell today announced a discovery off the coast of Gabon but says it will need to conduct further analysis to determine just go much gas is present.

The find, located 90 miles off the coast of the west African country, is located in water nearly 7,000 feet deep.

“Shell has been exploring in Gabon for over 50 years,” said Andy Brown, international director for Shell Upstream, in a statement. “This latest deep water discovery is a testament to the innovation of our explorers in pursuing new plays, and application of our global sub-surface expertise.”

Shell has a 75 percent stake in the well, which it operates, and China National Offshore Oil Corp., a Chinese national oil company, has a 25 percent stake.

Earlier this month, Shell announced that it had begun producing oil from its first deepwater project off the coast of Malaysia.
