What Went Wrong With Battleground Texas?
*Editor's note: This story has been updated throughout.
Battleground Texas launched in January 2013 with the goal of turning reliably red Texas into — at minimum — a purple state where Democrats could compete. But nearly two years later, on the day after the 2014 general election, Texas looks redder than ever.
No statewide Democrat came close to toppling a Republican opponent. That list of Democrats included Wendy Davis, who entered the governor's race with more national attention than any Texas Democrat in recent memory. With Battleground Texas as her field operation, Davis earned a smaller percentage of the vote ...

Dishonesty, deception, disregard for human life, disgusting tactics, distasteful campaign ads.........in short, they "dissed" the people of Texas and got what they deserved!

In my opinion, Texas Democrats made two mistakes in the Gubernatorial campaign. Letitia Van de Putte should have run for governor, and they should have emphasized the marijuana policy reform plank in their platform. In every state where marijuana policy reform is on the ballot, they see a huge outpouring of younger voters that never would have voted otherwise. The Texas Democratic Party has endorsed reform, they should have made a bigger deal of it. As for the Gubernatorial candidate, too many people outside Travis County knew only one thing about Wendy Davis, "Abortion Barbie". That was all they knew, and that was all they needed to know to vote against her. Leti would have been a much better choice. My dos centavos.

What went wrong after years of Obama bashing finally paid off! We have lost all love and compassion. It is a sad time for this Texan with cancer who was waiting for cannabis oil in 2013! Idnk if I can live long enough to see medical cannabis in Texas without leaving my home which is paid for in Texas! Which I could not sell for enough to move across country at age 65. Sad days ahead for Texas

At least they weren't responsible for the thousands of people who couldn't vote because of the unconstitutional voter ID law. Or do you plan to blame that on the Democrats, too?

Stop trotting out liberal democrats that would do well in California or the northeast and emphasize the more conservative "Yellow Dog" democrats. Until that happens, it'll never happen.

We have a global media which spent the week before the election bad mouthing the President and predicting a Republican take over. The major networks did not even cover the election results, leaving that job to MSBC and CNN where pundits continued throughout the night to insult the president and Democrats. These Globalists are trying to rewrite history to cover up Hitler and Mussolini's links to the Catholic Church. Both of them were born and raised Catholic and the Pope who wanted to object to Mussolini's race laws conveniently died the night before he was scheduled to confront Mussolini. Our Media is run by people who want to slander the Presbyterian Church as representing Italian Catholicism and gays and lesbians and women. Further they want to suggest that all men are anti Democracy and in favor of British aristocracy, leaving Democracy to women. Nothing could be further from the Truth. Democracy was created by Protestant Freemasons and continues to be our best hope for freedom from religious tyranny. We need to fight non violently for freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and freedom for all races and genders. Join Freemasons FDR, Churchill, and Truman in restoring Democracy and freedom to both the Republican and Democratic Parties. Hitler banned Freemasonry once he banned Democracy. You will not find freedom under the domination of Global Catholicism. Wake up America and stop this addiction to lies and violence perverting our Churches, our Medical Institutions, our Press, and our Democracy.

Here are some suggestions. I admire Wendy Davis, but it might not have been the best idea to nominate a modern urban woman after 20 years of old white men being in charge. The electorate is simply not ready for it.
Going forward, suggestions are the following.
Speak to older white voters who are poor and disenfranchised but voting republican with a 'come home to the democratic party' speech. They used to vote democratic and no longer do, because they have been distracted by republicans citing liberal social issues. Remind them, particularly in East Texas, that their parents and grandparents and presumably they themselves used to vote economic self interest and can do so again.
Speak to suburban parents about issues that make a difference to them. It is a careful balance of stressing education, but not necessarily increasing spending. Plainly label conservative nut job ideas that middle class suburban parents would not like.
Continue to speak to urban liberals, but carefully note that they must be willing to compromise to achieve power and influence.
Continue to speak to blacks and latinos on the need for equal opportunities for all.
And whatever is done, for pete's sake, keep an eye on the 2020 census and the resulting redistricting; the state legislature must be made more competitive and more representative of all the people of Texas. Spend lots of money and time with good candidates for this goal.

The problem is people bitch and moan about how their Govenment treats them but won't get off thier asses to do anything about it. I've lost track of how many times I've heard "elections don't matter" this year. Well when only 33% of registered voters, roughly 12% of all voting aged adults, cast a ballot that become a self fulfilling prophecy. Elections will never matter as long as the angriest 12% of the voting age population in the state are making all of our decisions based on fear and ignorance.
Michael Williams via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Republicans know how to drive the message with only a few wedge issues, defining others for them. Democrats have forgotten how to concentrate on battling for the common person and define themselves for the electorate. Shotgunning a large number of issues, many of which are divisive and don't affect the average voter, will always be a losing strategy. Get back to basics and get the message out, and watch that change.

Actually Battleground Texas had no choice but to support Wendy Davis and become her de facto campaign once Texas Democratic Leaders wet themselves thinking they finally had a candidate who could win state office. Any serious vetting of Davis would have shown that she wasn't ready to be governor nor had a strong platform or experience to be considered a strong candidate. Wendy Davis has single-handedly destroyed Battleground Texas and any hope that anyone will take them seriously after this campaign cycle...

Texas Tribune get off your high horse. I block walked for Battleground and the efforts were incredible. The problem in Texas is not Battleground, but GOP obstruction and voter suppression. There were too many people to count that simply couldn't afford an ID and didn't have a friggin gun permit. Mainly the elderly, the disabled, minorities and the poor. If you're going to be cast as a News organization, start reporting facts. This was a stolen election with over 600,000 disenfranchised voters.
Mary Harris via Texas Tribune on Facebook
The voter ID law proved to be voter suppression. AND then Republican groups announced that it required two (2) picture ID's . That dissuaded many more from voting. Others just felt Democrats just couldn't win so why vote. Sad

I think it was misguided to apply a one-size-fits-all, OFA approach in Texas, when that strategy never worked in Texas in the first place. Texas is too unique for substantive gains to be made by applying strategy that's functioned in other states.

Until people wake up and realize that the Republican party doesn't care about people -- only money -- and that it uses incredible amounts of b.s. to focus on things like women's right to choose, immigration, patriotic flag waving -- all to distract people from the fact that they do NOTHING to make things better for the Average Joe, then nothing will change. People will keep voting against their best interests. And voter suppression is the last resort of a party that can't get votes any other way than by cheating.

What went wrong? Easy ... every GD candidate ran away from Obama's accomplishments! PERIOD. They didn't bother to mention what Democrats stand for, or what they wanted to do with minimum wage, or expanding healthcare. or immigration, or equal rights, or ... get the idea? They were all too busy pretending not to be Democrats and throwing attacks instead of INFORMING what they stood for! I'm truly disgusted and so happy I didn't give any of my money this year. What SHOULD be our example of what to do ... Pres Truman said in a quote "if you're a democrat in an election and you act like a republican the voter will pick the real republican every time". How about signs in 2016 like ... you want an increase in the Minimum Wage ... VOTE Democrat!
Jo Beth Jimerson via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Eh. Maybe we should all stop approaching elections like they are pep rallies and each party is trying to win the spirit stick. Start running ads on issues and how a leader will be different and don't be afraid to say, "I'm a moderate and here's why..." btw, I'd vote for the first person (of any party) who would push to eliminate straight-party voting (it enables laziness in not bothering to check out candidates) and actual term limits (2 terms or 8 years, whichever is longer).

What Went Wrong With Battleground Texas? Seriously? What Didn't Go Wrong With Battleground Texas? The deluded radical leftists of ACORN (aka Battleground Texas), most of whom aren't even Texans, preached to their choir for two years and now all of a sudden they just can't figure out how or why their message didn't resonate with Texans? It's because they know little or nothing of Texas outside the Austin city limits. It's because they repeat the same old tired liberal propaganda to each other to the point that they collectively began to believe fairy tales like Wendy from Rhode Island moving into the Governors Mansion next January. It's because they cling to delusional fantasies that elevate Ann Richards to progressive liberal icon status when in fact she was nothing but a destructive one term smart @$$ed loser with a bad attitude who single handedly guaranteed Republican domination of Texas Politics over the last two decades and probably for decades to come.
When one political party has a monopoly on power in Texas, it is never good in the long run for Texans, but as long as losers like Ann Richards, Wendy Davis, and the folks at ACORN (aka Battleground Texas) try to force progressive liberalism as a condition of voting Democrat in Texas, the Republicans will continue to dominate Texas politics.
Kevin Griffith via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Where did the Texas Dems go-- where are the Ann Richards? Mark Whites? Those who had a vision for Texas that didn't come from the DNC, but from the Texas Democratic party for the best interest of Texans? If you haven't noticed, Texans don't like outside interference-- been that way since France and Spain were fighting over who would get control of the land. Having out-of-staters come into Texas is an automatic L for those who Democrats who attempt to follow the DNC lead instead of keeping to their Texas roots.

In response to some of the comments regarding voter ID: if you are 65 or older or have a disability, you can vote by mail, without a photo ID. So the argument about the elderly not being able to vote due to not being able to get documents needs to go away.
Alicia Reddick Helton via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I'm very grateful to Battleground Texas for mobilizing so many Democrats. Now we/they need to rethink their strategy and refine it. That's not such a big deal. They have to find ways to make a clear statement of the mission of Democratic candidates, but the biggest hurdle I can see are the widespread lies told by Republicans at all levels, especially the lies that tend to scare people. A man I respect told me this morning that Wendy Davis had two abortions and lied about it so he couldn't support her. That's not true, is it? I don't want to support liars either, but how do we combat these stories that people are so convinced are true? I think it's important that we stop limiting our campaigning to those who have voted Democratic in the past. We can't change people's minds if we don't even try to talk to them.

Liberals - One of the hazards of being swept up in your own accolades from the deluded who populate the left coast & New York, is YOU, being left to look a fool!
Wendy Davis's candidacy was a fools bet that didn't even pay the juice!
I guarantee you Ms. Davis, is as genuinely shocked as all liberal pukes on the verge of aborting themselves because they lost this election handily. The numbers show us a defeat that made Bill Whites failed campaign look genius!
Despite the fact Wendy Davis made her name filibustering HB2, which garners an emotionally charged 70% support, in OUR blood-red state and in a year Democrats are sucking wind nationwide, makes yalls denial of reality simply mind numbing to the majority of Texans. Hell Ms Davis had such a hard time dealing with a few weeks back, she insulted every women in Texas with: "I can't believe women support my opponent."
Liberals are so damned intellectually dishonest, they can't believe that the majority of us didn't think Wendy was so darned adorable with her blonde locks and gimmicky pink sneakers that they are having very public meltdowns everywhere.
Here's a thought - she lost because her extreme liberal values even turned off LARGE portions of her own base!
"But, but, the jet set crowd assured us Wendy would win!, Jeremy gout 10's of millions and promised us we'd make Texas purple!"
Hogwash - ain't gonna happen anytime soon - deal with it or move to California!

As long as Liberals from out of state continue to flock in and try to reinvent the Texas Democratic Party in their national image, it will continue to fail. The Right Wing Radio shows in Rural Areas drives a 75 percent Republican vote which wins at a state level. Using the internet to get the counter message out is just not enough. Do you think TX Dems were forced to vote in OK? Given the asinine claims pinning Dem losses, in the reddest state in the US, on "voter suppression" and "gerrymandering", I'm sure more than one dimwit would answer "yes". It's obvious some of you shockingly ignorant nitwits are merely repeating something you heard Rachel Maddow, or some other liberal pundit, say about gerrymandering, yet you are too fuc*ing dumb to realize she wasn't talking about a statewide race.

19% is not much of a landslide, is it? The media all took their sweet time, the national Dems did not spend the money they should have. That's okay. From 1876 to 1994, Texas was all blue. I can best describe the effort of Battleground Texas to help Democrats in the Lone Star State with an analogy about an 18-wheeler that gets stuck under an overpass in Texas.
A dozen or so Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers arrive on the scene of a tractor-trailer stuck under an overpass and start to devise a plan to remove the rig. At their behest, workers scale the side of the truck with cutting torches, stage on top of the overpass and begin melting and carving the metal shell of the large trailer compartment, working in earnest as their Democratic supervisors point and direct them to focus on different areas. Crews begin to use sledge hammers to demolish portions of the overpass, to try to free the cab wedged into the concrete. After several hours, a Republican arrives on the scene, studies the crews and the truck for a minute, retrieves a ball-point pen from his lapel, unscrews the cap off one of the back tires of the rig and starts letting the air out. As he methodically makes his way from tire to tire, the Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers begin to holler at the crews to work faster. They even start verbally-attacking the Republican who, without flinching, continues to let the air out of each tire. After he completes his task, the Republican announces to the Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers that the 18-wheeler is no longer wedged under the overpass. The Republican then gets in his pickup and drives away.

Stop blaming election ID laws when other states have voter ID laws. I personally want to know who is voting. You have to have an ID for practically everything else. That law will get turned over on appeal and was only ruled unconstitutional by an Obama crony.
Battleground Texas just needs to face reality. This state is not nor will it become purple or blue. Even the assumption that Hispanics are automatic Democrats is not true. Abbott received 44% of the Hispanic vote overall and 50% of the male Hispanic vote.

Typical of the wholly-owned media you seek to blame people working on the problem and completely ignore the obvious. Texas doesn't have a special stupidity problem it has a huge information gap which the Tribune at times does seek to close but at other times ignores to keep it's funds flowing. Battleground said from the start that it was a multi-year effort and they have done good works so far. Democrats had exceptionally good candidates at the top of the ticket.
So to what should we attribute this Republican victory? First, look at that chronic, ongoing information gap. Second analyze all the legal and dark money that flowed into vicious, lying attack ads. They don't so much direct voters as to whom to vote for as they turn them off from even voting at all. But, oh no, media won't talk about that because they directly benefit from that money. Now look at the voter suppression laws which act exactly as the ads do. Faced with a hassle people won't even attempt to vote. Next look at the gerrymandering. Finally ask about the the vote-counting machinery of the state which has also been privatized in the hands of conservative-owned vendors.
Michael Massey via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Battleground Texas, is nonsense, you can not call a typically red state a battleground state. This state has never been a battleground. This state has voted for valued that go beyond political party. When parties switched their platform, Texas switched. Texas values, Texas strong. #1 in the economy. We do not need to be broke. Some people want to turn this State into a liberal wasteland. No thanks, keep Texas values with Texans! Even with the influx of liberals moving here for jobs that their states do not have! Due to failed liberal policies. Texas is strong even on its weakest day. Let's keep Texas like it is, too bad liberals can not see that strength from self is better than weakness from government.
