College of Nursing researcher honored for exploring learning in the video game world
A University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing professor’s use of 3D gaming technology to teach students about in-hospital pediatric care has earned her the top spot in a competition sponsored by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Judy Leflore will present her study – which explored whether a specially designed 3D video game worked as well as a lecture in teaching nursing students to respond in a clinical setting - during the Society for Simulation’s 11th International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in January in New Orleans. Her research abstract was selected as first place winner in the category of Emerging and Innovative Technologies and Methods.

Movin' Mavs to host clinic and tournament for injured soldiers
About 30 U.S. Army soldiers injured in military combat will sharpen their wheelchair basketball skills Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11, at the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) workshop and tournament at The University of Texas at Arlington. The event is hosted by the Movin’ Mavs, UT Arlington’s elite wheelchair basketball team.

UT Arlington planetarium to premier NASA funded show
The Planetarium at The University of Texas at Arlington is using NASA funding to explore the mysteries of Earth’s closest and most important star in “Magnificent Sun,” an original feature film set to premier Thursday. The 45-minute planetarium show is the third in a series developed by Manfred Cuntz , a UT Arlington associate professor of physics, and the planetarium staff over the past three years. Funding for “Magnificent Sun” came from a $ 30,000 public outreach supplemental grant from NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Physics program. Cuntz’s research, conducted with solar physicist David Hathaway of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., focuses on the structure of the solar surface, particularly convective patterns.

Popular sustainability master’s program coming to Dallas
The University of Texas at Arlington is responding to the popularity of a new sustainability-focused master’s program by expanding it to Dallas. Starting Jan. 4, the Interdisciplinary Studies Master of Science in Sustainability will be offered at The Universities Center at Dallas, 1901 Main St. The program, which is 36-hours and non-thesis, can be completed in one year. Classes address sustainability across a variety of academic and professional disciplines.

Associate dean gains national attention as part of defibrillation research team
A UT Arlington associate nursing dean is co-author of a new, nationally-noted paper that raises questions about the effectiveness of in-hospital use of automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. The findings from the research team that included UT Arlington professor Beth Mancini and other researchers say that while AEDs improve survival for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, similar use in a hospital setting does not lead to an improved rate of survival. The work is published in the Nov. 17, 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, and is available online.

UT Arlington receives almost $1.5 million to prepare science, math teachers
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.45 million Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant to The University of Texas at Arlington College of Education and Health Professions and College of Science to support the education and certification of new science and math teachers. UTeach Arlington on its way to producing more secondary math and science teachers
UTeach Arlington, which teams faculty from the College of Science and the College of Education and Health Professions, is patterned after the UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin. American Chemical Society honors UT Arlington professor with prestigious national award
UT Arlington chemist Purnendu “Sandy” Dasgupta is being honored by the world’s largest scientific society for pioneering advances in the field of chromatography, a process used in water quality studies, air pollution monitoring, drug development and more. The American Chemical Society this week named Dasgupta the recipient of its 2011 Award for Chromatography. Award winners are chosen based on nominations from peers and expert reviewers in their field. Dasgupta will receive $5,000 along with the chromatography award, which is sponsored by SUPELCO Inc.

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science will award UT Arlington physics professor Ramon Lopez its 2010 Distinguished Scientist Award, the group announced this week. UT Arlington, Hertz offer students more sustainable transportation options
The University of Texas at Arlington is offering students an Earth-friendly option for getting around town this fall by becoming part of a unique nationwide car sharing program. Connect by Hertz is a pay-as-you-go car membership club. Students or faculty will pay as little as $8 an hour or $62 a day to use one of two cars parked at conveniently located lots on campus. The cost includes gas, insurance, 24-hour roadside assistance, gps navigation and other features.

National Science Foundation committee praises UT Arlington chemist's life-saving work
UT Arlington chemistry Professor Purnendu “Sandy” Dasgupta’s work with arsenic detection is an outstanding representation of research that furthers knowledge, discovery and learning, says a committee of experts appointed by the National Science Foundation. Dasgupta used NSF funds to develop an analyzer for arsenic in drinking water that could help the millions of people at risk of exposure from naturally-occurring arsenic contamination in South and East Asia. The instrument is less expensive and more effective and environmentally-friendly than current methods.

Research on patient room design brings international recognition for nursing professor
“An Empirical Examination of the Safety and Efficiency Implications of Patient Room Handedness” took home the Best International Research Project award this month at the 2010 Design & Health International Academy Awards at the University of Toronto in Canada. Researchers’ examination of hospital rooms designed for right or left-handed health-care workers and whether other standardization of the rooms is needed drew praise from judges.
