Bentley Is an Extremely Cute Dog, But Tomorrow's Press Conference Is Insane

Maybe we should leave them alone.
As of Tuesday, Amber Vinson and Nina Pham, the two Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital nurses to get Ebola after treating Thomas Eric Duncan, are Ebola-free. It's remarkable, inspiring news. Seeing the two speak at their post-release press conference was, in a way, like seeing someone back from the dead.

Then there's Bentley. Bentley, as you surely know, is Pham's impish, year-old King Charles Spaniel. After Pham's diagnosis, he was taken from her Marquita Avenue duplex to be monitored for signs of Ebola at Hensley Field in Grand Prairie. The dog's now officially Ebola free, so he's going to be reunited with Pham tomorrow.

That's awesome.

Unfair Park couldn't be happier for Pham and Bentley. We look forward to seeing video of them getting back together.

All of that being said, what's happening tomorrow at 9 a.m. is ridiculous.

After Pham reunites with Bentley, there's going to be a press conference. Attended by both Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. Dr. Wesley Bissett, a Texas A&M vet who helped care for Bentley will speak, as will Jody Jones from Dallas Animal Services.

On a certain level, it makes sense. The reunion should be a cathartic moment for Pham and Bentley. People around the world have supported Bentley. Holding a media event like this just seems a little gauche. Pham's said she realizes how much the public cares about the dog and seeing a happy ending, which is certainly true, we just don't know what Rawlings and Jenkins have to do with it.

It's not nutty.  We like nice dog and cat stories.

Word is that the presser is on hold now that Bentley has retained a top pooch lawyer (who agreed to handle the case pro-bone-o). He is now in negotiations for an exclusive with TMZ.

The item here announcing Pham's release got two comments. One congratulating her, etc, and one from me predicting the dog would get more reaction. Heh.

Good doggy.

It's good for Bentley that soon-to-be-former-Dr. Tierce wasn't the attending veterinarian. BAM!

Reporter: Bentley, what was your life like in the shelter?

Bentkey: Ruff! Ruff!

Reporter: While you were in the shelter did you have anything to protect you from the rain and the sun?

Bentley: Woof.

Reporter: Are you happy to be home again?

Bentley: (wags tail)

I hope they plan on talking about their commitment to saving all of the other animals that come in there daily and the added money the city is going to be spending to build a newer expanded shelter to actually service the community.

But no. They'll say how awesome the staff was that treated this one dog. Then they'll go right back to their crappy service and excessive euthanizations due to the crap shelter Dallas runs.

@wcvemail  You're an idiot.  You should be so lucky as to have Dr. Tierce care for your animals.

Oh, now you want consistent standards, too?! What next, extra pudding?

@John1073  I totally agree unless that can make enough from extra donations due to this bit of PR. AND as long as they use those extra donations for the critters vs "administrative" cost.   I see more and more people starting to donate to no kill shelters as they are sort of giving up on the empty promises of our city run shelters.

That depends, what is a kudo worth these days?

@wackish I am almost believing that you ARE the former Dr. Tierce except for the use of the name wackish.

Are you being incredibly sarcastic or do you sincerely support him?  If not, how would wcevmail be "so lucky" to have Mr. Tierce to care for his animals?

Got One!!! I mean...

You're a brainwashed cultist who's in near-psychotic denial of reality. How much money are you prepared to give your cult leader? All you have? Will you sell your possessions and haunt the courtroom when that Frankenstein poodle killer gets his comeuppance? Will you continue to read his screeds from jail, like the polygamous Mormon sheep?

Speaking of sheep, baaaad wackish, how can you be sure that Tierce never fucked any of those animals? That's a long career to be wondering about furry sex, how can you be sure?

Cultist. You eagerly volunteered to be castrated by him, didn't you.

Houston's shelter is apparently in terrible shape, going back years, beset by both politics and health problems due to lack of infrastructure brought on by those political problems. Austin seems to be slowly breaking the mold of shoddy and heart-breaking muni doggie management, but that's been dragging on for years. Then there's Aransas Pass, where the city manager recently announced that they're going to prioritize killing over rescue/adoption.

@wcvemail Are any of these associate with the ASPCA? Did you know that Sarah McClachlan commercial has raised something like 300 million bucks........but for some reason they make it next to impossible to find out how much of that goes to the dogs and cats.   I suspect that is work along the lines of the Susan Koman foundation where administrative salaries are through the roof.

@ColonelAngus

A buck two-eighty in real money. Hardly worth it.

The Nurse in Maine deserves the Hippocratic kudos for valiantly standing up for her rights while panicking two states and two countries and telling the majority of the country they're essentially dumbfucks. Do no harm, indeed.

As a democrat and a woman, she just has to be the victim at any cost.

@JackJett @wcvemail Most if not all large national non profits have a similar structure. You have to spend money to make money unfortunately. Just like politics.

There's also competing organizations. ASPCA is a national org that is actually more into ending animal cruelty, much like PETA. They're not really in the shelter game.

There is an SPCA of Texas, which does have shelters and clinics, one of which is in Dallas. They are also a non profit.

Dallas Animal Services is run by the city. How much outside help they get I do not know. I would assume it would be in the city budget somewhere.

That being said, they're all here to help, but if you have one that has an inherent problem of being underfunded and you're protecting the jobs of campaign buddies, like the DAS, then you have another problem. That doesn't help animals.

@JackJett @wcvemail

AFAIK, I'm pretty sure there's no association for any of those municipalities with the ASPCA except as the source of generic, recommended, best practices. The ASPCA is toothless (not sorry, I did that on purpose) when it comes to barking (!) at municipalities, as the Houston thing has been dragging on through time and courts, without so much as a mewl (!) from bodies like the ASPCA except when cited as recommended practices.

@John1073 @JackJett @wcvemail  I so understand the philosophy that you need really good and highly qualified people to work (especially in fundraising) in these groups and to get good people, you need to offer competitive salaries.  But the salaries do tend to get out of hand and if  you are putting on an event that cost $100,000 to produce and brings in $10,000 then something of off kilter.

I noticed this years ago in LA and working with various AIDS organizations and a few of them got caught with too many hands in the cookie jar.

I have reached the point where I will donate to no kill shelters, rescue groups, or those amazing people who take in old horses. I like to be able to visit and see where the money is going.

For example, on FB now is a girlfriend of mine whose Mini Pincher died two weeks ago.  Coincidently her elderly neighbor passed away who had one as well   She took in his "Min Pin" and it jumped out of her hands last weekend and had his and pelvis surgery.  So we set up funding for her and the $$ will go straight to the Vet.   I am finding I prefer to help on a more personal and local level.

BTW....I assume DAS is Dallas Animal Services.   I think I am confused by who comes under who's umbrellas.   ie. ..ASPCA and SPCA.
