Even though the vast majority of Canadians want an integrated approach to climate change and energy, we are increasingly being divided by polarized debates about our natural resources. Government and industry are spending millions of dollars on advertising campaigns designed to confuse the public.
Meantime, newspapers and TV stations are slashing staff at the time we need them most.
That’s why DeSmog Canada is launching this reporting project to clean up Canada’s energy debate by shining a light on issues overlooked by traditional media.
With your support, we will:
• Bring you the most in-depth stories on government and industry spending on multi-million dollar ad campaigns selling pipelines and oil development.
• Shine a spotlight on fake grassroots groups designed to confuse the public debate.
• Tell the stories of scientists who are being muzzled and bring voice to scientific evidence.

An overwhelming majority of the world’s climate scientists agree the world's climate is changing and that the burning of fossil fuels is to blame. We know the risks are incalculable and, increasingly, we understand the solutions are affordable.
We firmly believe Canadians deserve more constructive conversations about our energy future. To do so, we need to be realistic about the challenges of moving away from fossil fuels while addressing the urgency of climate change.
For the past 18 months, DeSmog Canada has brought Canadians ground-breaking reporting on important climate and energy issues. Here are just a few examples:
• We reported on the Government of Alberta inviting oil companies to design curriculum for kids' classrooms. After campaigners jumped on our story, public pressure led one major company to back out of the project.
• A DeSmog Canada investigation uncovered unprecedented spending by Enbridge in advance of a vote on the Northern Gateway pipeline in Kitimat.
• This summer, we uncovered how Postmedia, one of Canada’s largest newspaper chains, ran paid advertisements for the oil industry disguised as editorial content.
At DeSmog Canada, we know to clean up the debate we need to reach Canadians of all stripes. That’s why we don’t just publish stories on our website — our articles are routinely featured in The Huffington Post, Victoria Times-Colonist and Vancouver Observer and our coverage has sparked stories in the Calgary Herald, CBC Radio, Metro News and the Calgary Sun.
