11 Wonderful Pizzas in Dallas That Are Not Neapolitan

For our end of year pizza binge we wanted to try out some of the better pizza in town, but with one hitch– not Neapolitan style. We have saw an onslaught of pizza being brought to the forefront and most of the new spots in Dallas are of the Neapolitan variety. There will be even more of this style of pizza coming, and that is fantastic. We love this, but what are some of the best non-Neapolitan pizzas in the Dallas area? Glad you asked.

Rahr and Lakewood Breweries Kicked It Up At Luck Last Night For A Little Beer Week Fun

As NTX Beer week continues, last night was definitely a gem in its hat as two beloved breweries came together and made magic happen along with the boys at LUCK in Trinity Groves.

The dinner was nothing short of breath taking, as LUCK understands beer and pairings extremely well. Each course met with a different beer, culminating to a collaborative brew of both Rahr and Lakewoods making.  The meeting of beer minds is nothing particularly new to this industry, but it is always a little special when two local breweries, this time one from Dallas the other Fort Worth, come together and make a special kind of love. This particular brew is a Belgian-style dubbel. Balanced, smooth and malty sweet with a hint of spice from the Belgian yeast.   Continue reading

Lazaranda Is Three, and Celebrates with a Blowout Chef’s Bash

There is Tex-Mex food, and there is Mexican food. No Dalllasite seeking authentic Mexican food in their hometown need travel far nowadays. There are dozens of neighborhood Mexican places scattered across the area, each typically reflecting the food of the region where the owners originated.

There is also the adventurous Mexican food of Mexico’s big cities. Restaurants with names like Komali, Lazaranda, MesoMaya and Wild Salsa. They offer a chance to explore chilies more arcane and intriguing that Tex-Mex’s jalapeños (Komali had six different chilies on its menu the last time I was there), sample ingredients uncommon in European-inspired cooking. How about a side of cactus? How about huitlacoche growing on your corn? How about fried insects? One can also experience the exhilarating flavors and textures created when the native ingredients of Mexico are inducted into the sophisticated preparation techniques of France.

At a packed blow out six-course Third Anniversary Dinner (at which I was an invited media guest), Lazaranda reiterated that it is a master at the latter. Executive chef Antonio Marquez trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, so that really should not be too much of a surprise. A first course of Fuji apple soup with goat cheese croutons, topped with toasted walnuts and cilantro oil was as subtle and harmonious as any soup served in one of the city’s top restaurants. I am going to start a reality show which swaps dishes at smart restaurants with food from ethnic places just before service. The dinners will be quizzed at the end of the meal as to which of course was the ringer. This sophistication and elegance of this dish would have made it indistinguishable from one of Bruno Davaillon’s glorious soups at the Mansion.    Continue reading

How does a multi-national fast food conglomerate market a vastly unhealthy item without spending an equally unhealthy amount of cash to get the word out to the masses? Create a secret menu item with eight types of meat and a few slices of cheese to boot.

The Meat Mountain is made of 2 chicken tenders, 1.5 ounces of roast turkey, 1.5 ounces of ham, 1.5 ounces of corned beef, 1.5 ounces brisket, 1.5 ounces of Angus steak, 1.5 ounces of roast beef, 3 half-strips of bacon, pus a slice of cheddar and Swiss. All this for a totally underground ten bucks. This is a pretty good deal if you are sincerely that hungry. Priced separately these items add up to around $30 in various degrees of Arby sandwichdom.   Continue reading

New Urban Thai Restaurant Kin Kin Opens Jan 2015

James Beard recognized Chef Eddy Thretipthuangsin is ready to embark on a flavorful new adventure with Kin Kin Urban Thai. Expected to open in January 2015, the 3,500 sq. ft. eatery located at 2801 W. 7th Street in Fort Worth, will be a culinary journey to his homeland, as he shares his personal interpretation on traditional Thai cuisine.

“I want to reintroduce classic dishes in a whole new way,” says Eddy. In Thai Kin Kin can be interpreted as “Eat Up,” or “Let’s Eat,” and that is what Chef Eddy wants guests to do at this innovative dining destination. “I wanted to open a restaurant where we would want to eat.

The flavor profile of Kin Kin is vibrant and modern, just like visiting Thailand today. “For the first time, I can tell my food story,” said Chef Eddy. “But it all starts with my mother.
