SANTIAGO, Chile (CBS/AP) — A strong earthquake far off the coast of Chile has prompted authorities to warn of a possible tsunami risk for towns along the Pacific.

The 6.0-magnitude quake was recorded early Saturday. The U.S. Geological Service said it was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 340 miles (544 kilometers) southeast of Easter Island at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

The Chilean island is famous for the monumental statues known as Moai which were created by the Rapa Nui people. Located about 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) off the Chilean coast, it is home to nearly 6,000 people.
