SXSW: a band's eye view of the festival – in pictures
British folk rockers Turin Brakes are at SXSW in Austin and performed at the festival last night. We asked them to capture the atmosphere as they see it, letting them take over the Guardian Instagram feed for yesterday and today, to get a band’s eye view of the buzz on the streets

Hiya! It’s me, Olly, (on the right) with Turin Brakes here at SXSW in Austin. We’ll be bringing you some of the chaos and wonder of this huge melting pot of a festival, with more photos coming as the day goes on! All photographs: Olly Knights

We landed in Austin last night and strode straight into the madness of SXSW. This guy was giving out free hugs to all, and we immediately understood that this festival seems to be more of a multicultural mash-up than most things we've experienced in the UK – hip hoppers, Indy kids, emos and dreamos getting along just fine and dandy!

"Touch me, I'm hot" That's what Iron Man said. Now were off for some Mexican food – starving but happy. So many bands in one place, checking each other out like a load of strange cats in someone's back garden …

Back stage viewing platform. Gopro cameras in every conceivable position. Lots of tech on this stage.

Palm Door Catering is making food for 220 parties, 3,000 volunteers and 75,000 people in total over the course of SXSW – from this kitchen! And it's just behind our stage tonight.

Remember that time when you were a kid and said you'd like a truck with a swimming pool in the back?

Skywriting earlier in the blue sky of Austin – we watched them and figured they work like dot matrix printers. They were advertising their own skywriting company, which all seemed very postmodern.

A pre gig Lone Star beer - the number #1 beer in Texas. It's not exactly a craft IPA but it's nice and cold and crispy here at #sxsw.

Sometimes it’s nice to just wander into a show. I’m not going to lie, we had no idea who this was but there were dancers, lasers and giant inflatable balls and we all broke into those Southpark smiles and joined in the glitter.

If you're lucky enough to be invited to play an in store showcase at Waterloo Records here in Austin you get a discount on their vinyl... It's a very very dangerous situation for us to be in with our luggage restrictions for the flight back to London! Gah!!! Must. Not. Buy. Vinyl.

Backstage at Waterloo Records' SXSW showcase. A member of Tinariwen from the Sahara desert emerges out of a classic American slipstream trailer, one of my favourite moments of the last two days.
