Republicans historically have higher turnout in midterm elections. I could name reasons, but then all the liberals will just call me prejudice.

While no doubt Dems got flubbed nationally and statewide, I don't think TM's map is accurate. In Hidalgo County, both Dem & Repub straight ticket votes were up 11%. Dem votes for gov were up about 3% and for Repubs the gov vote was up 20%. In the map, they have HC with up to 2.5% loss of dem votes from the 2010 Gov race. That's not accurate according to Hidalgo County election results.
