    The Mental Health Policy Initiative for Texas Exonerees at the University of Texas at Arlington was awarded an $80,990 grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health for its groundbreaking research of the mental health needs and lack of services for people who are exonerated after being wrongfully convicted and imprisoned in Texas.

    Jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator Dan Cavanagh, assistant director of jazz studies and assistant professor of music at The University of Texas at Arlington, has released a new CD. The disc, "Pulse," features his original compositions played by "Dan Cavanagh's Jazz Emporium Big Band." Included with the professional saxophone, trumpet, trombone and rhythm section players are UT Arlington Jazz Orchestra director Tim Ishii, Jim Yakas, the director of marching percussion, and faculty members Brian Mulholland and Ken Edwards. Micah Hayes, visiting assistant professor of music media and business, mixed and co-produced the album.

The gift will be matched by funds from an existing endowment to establish the Alcon-Goolsby Endowed Chair in the Goolsby Leadership Academy. Alcon is a multi-billion eye-care company.

    The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Promise financial aid program has taken a significant step toward making higher education more affordable by granting free tuition to students whose household income is $65,000 or less. The expanded program begins in January 2009 for the spring semester. The current threshold is $40,000, which was increased from $25,000 earlier this year. Full tuition for an undergraduate student taking 12 hours is $8,000 a year.

  • NASA selects UT Arlington to display artifact; funds new shows

    The Planetarium at UT Arlington has been selected as a recipient in the new artifact loan program at NASA. The planetarium has received a tire from the main landing gear of the Space Shuttle Columbia, which was destroyed over East Texas on Feb. 1, 2003, on its landing descent to Kennedy Space Center after the completion of a microgravity research mission. University of Texas at Arlington alumnae Kalpana Chawla, for whom the university’s newest residence hall is named, was one of the crew members tragically killed in the accident.

    The North Texas Consortium of Schools of Nursing in collaboration with area hospitals has developed patient care teaching/learning modules to share with schools of nursing in Texas. These modules are based on high risk/high volume patient diagnoses likely to be encountered in nursing practice. The goal is to increase patient safety as well as the clinical competence and confidence of new nurses graduating from initial licensure programs in the state. The modules are created by nursing school faculty and hospital-based educators using a variety of teaching methods including some designed for use with high fidelity simulation manikins.

    Forty University of Texas at Arlington undergraduate math and biology students will receive financial assistance, mentoring, seminars, research experience and specially designed course work thanks to a $780,946, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant is part of the Interdisciplinary Training Program for Undergraduates in Biology and Mathematics at the National Science Foundation, and it will support a program at UT Arlington called Undergraduate Training in Theoretical Ecology Research (UTTER).

    Carrizo Oil & Gas has completed the process of fracture, stimulating the gas flow to the surface, at the gas well site near the southeast corner of The University of Texas at Arlington campus. The well completion phase is almost complete, and it is anticipated that natural gas will be flowing soon. The final activity in the well completion phase includes the process of flowback and flaring.

    Fall enrollment at The University of Texas at Arlington has reached 25,061, an increase over last year’s enrollment of 24,888. The incoming freshman class of 2,310 is an increase of 175, or 8.7 percent over last year. Minority enrollment continued to increase, especially among Hispanic students, whose ranks increased by 214 or six percent. Asian students increased by 3.7 percent, and blacks by 0.2 percent.

  • Large Hadron Collider at CERN sent out first beam

    Scientists today sent the first beam of protons zooming at nearly the speed of light around the 17-mile Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at the CERN laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC is the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. The University of Texas at Arlington built components for the ATLAS particle detector at the LHC and is the lead institution for the SouthWest Tier 2 computing facilities that will analyze data from the giant detector. UT Arlington Professor of Physics Kaushik De is the computing operations coordinator for the ATLAS in the United States.

  • UT Arlington receives NSF grant, one of 20 in United States, to develop math and science teachers

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $750,000 Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant to The University of Texas at Arlington College of Education and College of Science to support the training of new teachers. The colleges will work with the Arlington, Dallas and Fort Worth independent school districts on the five-year project, placing the teacher candidates in early field experiences with mentor teachers in the three districts.

  • Physicists discover "doubly strange" particle

    Physicists of the DZero experiment at the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have discovered a new particle made of three quarks, the Omega-sub-b (Ωb). The particle contains two strange quarks and a bottom quark (s-s-b). It is an exotic relative of the much more common proton and weighs about six times the proton mass.

    The University of Texas at Arlington Department of Theatre Arts will open the 2008-09 season with the zany comedy, “Scapino!” by Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale. Andrew Gaupp, professor and associate chairman for theatre arts, will direct. This show received rave reviews in its original premiere on Broadway. The comedy, set in a dockside restaurant in Naples, begins with a song made up from the menu.
