Remembering the Photographer David Armstrong

“What I really like about photography is that there’s this degree of detachment, where you’re mediating a person rather than actually being with them,” said the photographer and T contributor David Armstrong ahead of his “Mad About the Boy” exhibition at Half Gallery in 2010. “It’s a heightened kind of being with them: You want to know them but you also want to get a good picture of them.”

Armstrong, who succumbed to liver cancer on Saturday, remains with us through his compelling images. Here, in honor of his life and work, a brief look back at some of his appearances in the Times, including the occasions when the lens was turned on him.
