Buehler acquitted of failing to comply with officer’s order

Updated 5:30 p.m. —

5:30 p.m. update: A jury has found Antonio Buehler not guilty of failing to comply with the order of an officer on New Year’s Day 2012.

The verdict came after more than five hours of deliberations.

Earlier: A city jury has begun deliberations in the trial of Austin activist Antonio Buehler, charged with failing to comply with the order of a police officer in a controversial New Year’s Day arrest in 2012.

As the panel of five jurors weighs the misdemeanor case, they will debate one central question: Did a police officer give Buehler a lawful order when he told Buehler to put his hands behind his back after he was shouting questions and attempting to take pictures of officers arresting a woman?

Court: UK spies get bulk access to NSA data

The British government's insistence that its spies don't use the vast espionage powers of the U.S. National Security Agency to sidestep U.K. restrictions on domestic eavesdropping was called into question by a court document published Wednesday.

The two-page memorandum challenges that official line, carrying an acknowledgement by Britain's electronic eavesdropping agency GCHQ that it scoops up an undisclosed amount of "unanalyzed intercepted communications content" from its foreign intelligence partners without a warrant.
