The Breaking News Consumer's Handbook

Transcript

This week saw another breaking news event, the DC Navy Yard shooting, misreported by the press. Usually, we take time to point out how the media got it wrong and how they can do better next time. But this week we've decided to bring you a list of best practices that will help you, the media consumer, weed out bad information the next time an event like this takes place.

You can see our print version of the Breaking News Consumer's Handbook by following this link, or you can print it out as a PDF the next time there's a breaking news event.

Hey, guys. Looking forward to seeing and sharing the handbook. When you click on the "this link" to see the online version of the chart (rather than the downloadable version) it just links back to this page. Please fix as I'd love to have the web version. Thanks!

I can't be the only one that doesn't accept anything, ANYTHING, I see, hear, or read during the early hours of some breaking story. Doesn't OTM think that it's audience gets it? Even Jeff Zucker understands that the audience knows what's being reported may not be true. However, from the looks of John Stewart's 'take down' of the coverage, some people think we're still children.
