In Virginia yesterday, a rocket carrying hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment—including prepackaged meals for the International Space Station, school science projects and "classified cryptographic” gear—exploded shortly after liftoff. The rocket, which was at a NASA site, was supplied by private contractor Orbital Sciences. The company has stressed that it was too soon to know whether the Russian-built engines, modified for the Antares and extensively tested, were to blame.
