Ray Allen says he'll watch how season goes, only needs a week to get ready

Ray Allen's just chilling. He's staying in shape, but still isn't in a rush to get back on an NBA roster. There are several teams who would be interested, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are a front-runner, but the free agent guard told the Hartford Courant's Dom Amore that he's enjoying his enjoying hanging out at home.

"I've just been home, taking my kids to school," said Allen, who has been contemplating whether to retire after 18 seasons in the NBA. "I'm working out, taking care of my body. I'm in great shape. I'll just watch how the season progresses, and if I do feel the desire to continue to play, then I'll decide what situation is viable for me."

He decided to prepare on his own timetable, rather than go through the rigors of a training camp. He says he could be ready to play in about a week.

"I still feel certain aches and pains; that's definitely old age," he said. "To be able to run, and back off a little bit, lift, and back off a little bit instead of going at it 100 percent all the time like I've been doing has helped."

No one seems to know what Allen's time table is, though Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said it could be December or January, giving him a chance to watch various contending teams and see who's playing well and where he'd fit best. We've all been talking about the 82-game schedule being way too long, so perhaps the 39-year-old Allen has outsmarted everybody.
