Swim Teacher Dies After Jeep Rear-Ended On Toll Road

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas Department of Public Safety is trying to determine if road rage between two drivers led to the crash and death of a third driver late Saturday night near Josey Lane on The Sam Rayburn Tollway. Investigators say a car changing lanes at a high rate of speed ran into the back of an SUV causing it to lose control and flip, killing the driver.
The man killed in the wreck is Kyle Tilley, 26, a swimming coach in flower mound and Lewisville.
“It was, uh, it was shocking,” said fellow coach and longtime friend Jeff Jones.
“In fifteen years of coaching I’ve never dealt with anything like this,” said Craig Harris who coached with Tilley.
The Department of Public Safety said the nineteen year old driver of a Lexus was changing lanes at a high rate of speed when he hit Tilley’s SUV from behind sending it out of control.
and investigators have not ruled out the possibility the Lexus driver may have been involved in a road rage incident with a third driver, although a DPS representative said it was still early in the investigation.
“The first thought there is emotion, there is anger in there,” Jones said. “And then I started thinking. there were too many people affected by the loss of somebody like Kyle that that’s not something that should not be out there at all,” said Jones.
Instead, Tilley’s friends say they’ll focus on helping the hundreds of students deal with the loss of their beloved swim coach as they struggle with their own grief.
“I look back at it now and I realize what if I had spent more time?” Harris pondered. “Or maybe even communicated exactly how much I appreciated him as a person and a coach. You know, if you can’t get that time back now.”
“Just the thought of him not walking through the door, that’s the hard thing thinking about that,” Jones said.
