ARLINGTON (105.3 THE FAN) – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo left Monday’s game with a back contusion in the third quarter but returned for the team’s final two drives.

Romo and the Cowboys’ offense were unable to convert at the end of regulation or in overtime, turning the ball over on downs to seal the 20-17 win for Washington.

Linebacker Keenan Robinson appeared to deliver a knee to Romo’s back on third down. The 12-yard sack forced Dallas to punt and forced Romo to the locker room for further evaluation.

“It felt like some sort of knee or elbow hit me perfectly in a spot that sends a negative feeling,” said Romo after the game. “I don’t know even if I hadn’t had a back injury, I would have probably felt that one pretty good.”

The 34-year-old was left lying on the field for a few minutes. He was, however, able to leave the field on his own power, missing two key series leading into the fourth quarter.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says there are no structural issues, as X-rays came back negative.

“It’s a back contusion. Obviously, he was back out there. We knew there were no structural issues when they gave him X-rays in there. He wanted to come back in.”

Backup Brandon Weeden filled in admirably for Romo, leading Dallas on a game-tying 80-yard touchdown drive. Romo returned after receiving an injection for pain by the training staff.

Jones knew in the training room that his start quarterback was planning to return — that is, if the Cowboys needed him.

“If he were needed, he wanted to play. He told us early that he was going to come back out if it were that kind of game at the end of the game,” said Jones.

And he was needed.

But a 4th down pass to Dez Bryant fell incomplete, ending the Cowboys’ six game winning streak.

The 34-year-old had surgery in December for a herniated disk.

The team’s third quarterback, Dustin Vaughan, was inactive on Monday.
