FORT WORTH — Buoyed by recent polling numbers in the Texas governor's race, Republican nominee Greg Abbott touted his support among female voters during a Wednesday campaign stop, less than a week before the Nov. 4 election.

"The great irony about the way this campaign for governor has turned out is that my opponent, Wendy Davis, said she was going to win the women’s vote. I am winning the women’s vote," he said at a rally in Davis' hometown, where he appeared with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Konni Burton, the Republican running for Davis' state ...

I never felt a war on women till Obama put the brakes on the economy and energy. Women are finding it more difficult to make ends meet. Grocery prices, electricity, gasoline...the things families must buy, have increased dramatically since Obama took office. The Democrats policies are putting more and more families in the poor-house.

Different issues at play in that election versus this one Herve. Also, the highest poll at that time showed Williams up by 8 and he lost by 3.5 (Delta of 11.5%). Highest poll today shows Davis losing by 20 points. With almost half the vote in already, there is no way that she can win.

One thing that no one has pointed out is the fact that both of Wendy's hometown papers- the Star Telegram and the Morning News- endorsed Abbott. While the ST is still somewhat conservative, the MN is not. People who have had experience with her in North Texas know that she would simply be as ineffective a governor as she has been a campaigner.

I'm a woman and I didn't vote for Mr. Abbott. But I know that the office of the governor is not the strongest one in Texas government, so I can grit my teeth if Wendy Davis doesn't beat him out. What I would like to see the Texas Tribune address is how so many of the top elected officials of Texas, achieve their offices without a true mandate. Ted Cruz won the US Senate in a runoff primary - general election notwithstanding. If Dan Patrick wins as Lt. Governor, he will have also won it in a runoff primary - general election notwithstanding. Neither of these men won their direct primary - especially not Ted Cruz. But he walks around Washington as if every single Texan supports him. Even Rick Perry never won the gubernatorial election with more than 39% of the total vote (remember there were independent candidates to shred that up). Once the low voter turnout problem of Texas is solved, the 'red' sea will probably turn blue. Quite frankly, I want it to be purple. I've had enough of the political polarization.

Davis will probably win the DEMOCRATIC WOMEN'S vote, but the problem is that to have any chance of a victory she had to cut into the SUBURBAN WHITE WOMEN's vote...like Ann Richards was able to do in 1990. Davis has been unable to do that because what those who told her she could get a large portion of that vote overlooked was that it has been 24 years since Richards was able to penetrate that voting group. She was able to do so because Clayton Williams appeared to be so out of touch with women's' issues...Abbott is clearly out of touch with women who support "reproductive freedom"....but the sad fact is that the Suburban women who disagree with him either have died since 1990 or left the GOP years ago. Davis will get the White Democratic women and the ethnic women....but not a majority of THE Women's vote.
