Man shot, fires set as Giants fans celebrate World Series victory

A man was shot in the arm, fires were set and bottles were thrown at police officers late Wednesday as revelers celebrated the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series, authorities said.

Shortly after the game a man was shot in the Mission District, at 21st and Valencia streets, said San Francisco police Officer Gordon Shyy. The bullet hit his arm and he sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was at-large and there was no description available.

Some people started bonfires with debris in the Mission District, Shyy said. Most of the flames were extinguished by firefighters and police officers.

"There's a few more that were set that we're still working on," Shyy said.

TV news footage showed officers in riot gear deployed in the Mission District, as crowds took to the streets. After officers moved people out of the Mission District, fans moved to 24th Street and started dancing.

On Market Street, fans were throwing bottles at officers, Shyy said. It's unknown whether...

San Mateo health officials reviewing Ebola quarantine of doctor

Health officials Wednesday were reviewing the quarantine they set for a Stanford doctor who was treating Ebola patients in Liberia after the state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their own quarantine guidelines.

When Dr. Colin Bucks arrived at San Francisco International Airport last week, there were no state or CDC guidelines, said Robyn Thaw, spokeswoman for the San Mateo County Health System.

The county health system “is in the process of reviewing them to ensure our directive is in alignment with the new CDC guidelines defined as a healthcare worker with ‘some risk,’ ” Thaw said.

Bucks has not shown any symptoms of Ebola. He takes his temperature and reports back to San Mateo County Health System staff twice a day.

Bucks was told by the county health department to stay away from work and avoid close contact with people for 21 days. He was allowed to go jogging alone, Thaw said.

“We are very proud of the work this physician has done," said Dr. Scott Morrow, a...

UC Berkeley chancellor upholds Bill Maher speech despite protests

UC Berkeley’s administration is insisting that a campus speech by Bill Maher will proceed as scheduled in December despite opposition from students who say the offer should be rescinded to protest what they allege were anti-Muslim statements by the political satirist.

Citing Maher’s right to free speech, UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks said in a statement that “the invitation will stand, and [I look] forward to welcoming Mr. Maher to the Berkeley campus."

The statement noted that the decision “does not constitute an endorsement” of any of Maher’s views although it supports the television personality’s right to express them.

“More broadly, this university has not in the past and will not in the future shy away from hosting speakers who some deem provocative,” the statement said.

Maher, a comedian, author and host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” was asked to speak at UC Berkeley’s mid-year commencement on Dec. 20. But protesters wanted Maher to be disinvited because of...
