The Mean Green women’s basketball team defeated Rice University 66-52 on the road — the final road trip until the Conference USA tournament on March 11 in El Paso.

UNT (12-15, 6-8) never trailed in the game and held the Owls (12-16, 5-9) to a 32.8 percent field goal shooting on the night, outscoring the Owls by seven in each half and also forcing Rice to 20 percent three-point shooting.

“We played with a great focus and we really played hard,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We’ve been good defensively, and we played great defense tonight.”

Junior forward Briesha Wynn played all 40 minutes and led the Mean Green with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Petersen commended Wynn’s double-double and her all-around effort after the game.

“She played a really complete game,” Petersen said. “Wynn was a workhorse. She played with great energy defensively, as well as great energy on the offensive end.”

Owls senior forward Jessica Kuster had a game-high 26 points, but didn’t receive help from her teammates, with only of her teammates scoring more than five points. UNT focused on making the game difficult for Kuster.

“We knew it would be a big game,” Wynn said. “We knew Kuster was their best player and we tried to force her into taking tough shots.”

Senior guard Laura McCoy added 14 points, including four three-pointers, both of which season highs. Her output put her past 700 career points, now at 712 total. She is also two career three-pointers behind tying the No. 2 career record of 159.

“We came out with a mindset to win the game,” McCoy said. “We forced them to take outside shots. We played the high post and everybody played really well.”

The Mean Green will return home to play its last two games of the regular season, with the next against Louisiana Tech University at 2 p.m on March 1 at the Super Pit.
