Customer Reviews

Preferred previous version, but it's getting better

I love the app so much better than the paper, even though it was buggy at first. It's easy to read the highlights on the left and go to the articles that interest me. I really, really miss the extra photos in the Mansions section. I used to so look forward to Friday just for that section. I still look at it, but it's the biggest disappointment for me in the new release. Personally, I like the alerts and latest news section. I also like that it takes me back to the article I was reading, as sometimes I can't finish what I'm reading. Also, though I don't like all the one page ads, I have no problem swiping to the next page without waiting for them to load. I appreciate that it's very costly to run a good news operation. Please add the Editions link to the right top navigation, so I don't have to go back to Page One to find that link, or else have the swipe method to get there. I can easily get to sections and go from article to article I want to read using the right navigation and I can save articles I want to keep. Some people complained about lack of search. I honestly don't use search for the newspaper. Also the only time loading is slow is if I have a poor connection or am running out of storage space. Thank you for the work you do. I wouldn't take the time to read so much of the daily news if it weren't for this app.

Continuing problems, even though I love the content

To the WSJ powers that be: when aggregating all the comments about your iOS app, the "meta narrative" comes down to a lack of vision for digital content. Rather than sticking with what you are good at (providing substantive reporting of hard news along with excellent editorials written from a center right perspective) you are trying to be all things to all people. For example, you are trying to act like a cable news network app with the "breaking news" updates. And then you are trying to stay out ahead of the "digital curve" with constant updates that do not add any value to the app; in fact, it actually degrades the value of the app. So, here is my recommendation: get back to doing what is in your DNA, get rid of superfluous things that detract from your mission, and incorporate all of that into a digital strategy which serves your readers. Let's face it, creating user-friendly, easily searchable, high-quality articles and other content is where the future of digital journalism is headed. Paper is headed out the door. I would recommend hopping on this train; it has already left the station.

Better than the first iOS8

Small bugs are getting worked out. I do like the new format, but would like to have a landscape view. As others have said the content is always good. It's just that the app has to constantly refresh, so much so that it still crashes a lot and I have to relaunch the app...probably 10x/day. Maybe limiting the advertising data loads would help, I know that text isn't that onerous.

I think it would a benefit to go back to the old days somewhat and have 4-5 "editions" that come out throughout the day, like on the old iPad version...rather than to have to constantly update the content every time the app is opened. This is especially bothersome on restricted Wifi networks that don't allow the app content to load but it gives the appearance that the content is downloading when it is in fact not doing so. Maybe a hard time limit for networks to respond is in order and afterwards the previous download pulls back up.

Like the other guy said, we don't need "up to the second" news in print media. We just want to be able to access the content when we want to, on or off line.
