Derrick Rose looks like old self, scores 30 on Cavaliers (VIDEO)

Oct 21, 2014, 8:00 AM EDT

We hadn’t seen that Derrick Rose in Spain with Team USA at the World Cup. Or through the start of the preseason.

But explosive, vintage Derrick Rose showed up on Monday night when the Bulls took on the Cavaliers in an exhibition game (in Columbus at Ohio State). Rose was twisting Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters in knots, getting into the lane and knocking down 4-of-5 from three. He finished with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting on the night. But really you need to watch the video to see the explosive, attacking, finishing at the rim Rose again.

Even LeBron James noticed. So did Cavaliers coach David Blatt, both as reported by Chris Haynes of the Plain Dealer.

Rose haters please enter injury comments here

    • nflcrimerankingscom - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:53 AM

      Uh, ok thanks for asking.

Rose looked great. It’s great to see that he’s returned to his former self and his former style of play.

The same style of play that puts extremely high loads on his lower extremities.

The same high loads that his body couldn’t handle the past 3 years.

      Hmm…

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:12 AM

At least you admit you’re a hater

      • edon8334 - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:56 AM

I guess we’ll have to see what that 2 years of rehab has done and you’re welcome

      • nflcrimerankingscom - Oct 21, 2014 at 12:36 PM

I don’t hate Rose at all. He’s an awesome athlete. I “hate” people thinking you can sustain such a ridiculous level of musculoskeletal loading after multiple knee injuries. And by ‘sustain’, I mean game after game and month after month. It’s possible, but not very likely.

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 1:53 PM

edon8334 – “Rose haters please enter injury comments her”

nflcrime – “Uh, ok thanks for asking”

You are a hater and admitted it.

    • rjthakid - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:19 PM

Is it possible to make an injury comment and NOT be a Rose hater?

Rose is a fantastic player. Seriously. He’s Russell Westbrook with better decision making. He’s the most exciting PG since Allen Iverson in his prime.

      But he’s fragile.

First he tore the ACL in his left knee, then he tore the meniscus in his right knee. That’s a SERIOUS injury to each of his knees. Combine that with the fact that his game is almost entirely predicated on being explosive and he’s probably the LEAST likely player in the NBA to go the entire season without a serious injury.

Is that ‘hating’? I don’t think it is. I want Rose to be back. I want to see Bulls vs Cavs, Lebron vs. Rose in the Eastern Conference Finals.

      Yet it’s not likely.

39 games and an ACL tear in 2011-12.
      0 games in 2012-13
10 games and a meniscus tear in 2013-14

If you think he’ll play 70+ games this year, I’d love to know why. I don’t see it happening. That doesn’t make me a hater. It just means I haven’t engaged my Reality Distortion Field.

      • edon8334 - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:38 PM

Well he’s had 2 years to rehab so he’s coming back 100% healthy and yes he relies on explosiveness but he isn’t going 100% pedal to the floor all the time any more he’s said that those injuries made him change his game and play more under control. He’s still young (26 years old) . I don’t think him playing 70+ games will be a problem at all.

And I meant people who don’t like rose and want him to blow his knee out every time he jumps or thinks he’s washed up now because of those injuries

  2. tampajoey - Oct 21, 2014 at 8:55 AM

    Bulls lost the game

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Rose played 24 minutes. LeBron played 31 and Kyrie played 38. Plus no Jimmy Butler. Kyrie got off when Rose was on the bench.

      • nflcrimerankingscom - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:57 AM

Rose was +6. Another 12 minutes would add ~ +3 points. Bulls still lose easily.

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:19 AM

Yeah ok, there couldn’t be a dumber rationale than that. Another 12 minutes and Rose would have scored 40…easily.

  3. mywill02100 - Oct 21, 2014 at 9:02 AM

I’m not surprised by Drose one bit. His work ethic is very strong and he worked hard to get to this point. Now if he can build off this game going into the season were looking at a scary Bulls team and an MVP candidate

    • nickjackalson - Oct 21, 2014 at 5:04 PM

If the Bulls win 60 Rose will be MVP again

  4. sonnysuave - Oct 21, 2014 at 9:52 AM

What an awesome game to watch! He was rippin Kyrie to shreds… Kyrie definitely looked scared every time Rose touched the ball. Seems Rose wanted to prove Kyrie isn’t on his level yet… even tho Kyrie got the starting nod @ the summer games. And as truehooper pointed out… Kyrie didn’t regain his composure in the game till Rose came out. Blatt kept Kyrie in the game for 38min to pad his stats, so it’s similar to Rose’s stat line.

    • ProBasketballPundit - Oct 21, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Blatt played Kyrie 38 minutes because Kyrie is 22 years old and because Blatt said he was treating this game like a regular season game.

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 1:56 PM

So Kyrie will be playing 38mpg this season? And if Blatt was treating this like a reg season game, why was LeBron out to finish the game?

      • ProBasketballPundit - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:31 PM

@truehooper1421 Look, man. I know reading and using search engines is really hard so I’ll do this one for you. Blatt said he’s treating the Bulls preseason game like a regular season game in terms of minutes.

        http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/19/cavs-coach-david-blatt-will-treat-mondays-preseason-minutes-like-the-regular-season/

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Reading and using search engines is hard? Obviously comprehension is hard for you because my response was asking you about the minutes played. Sonny said Kyrie was in the game to boost his stats. You said what you said about Blatt. I said, so Kyrie will be playing 38 mpg? You then responded about attempting to insult my ability to read rather than answering my question to you.

Again, so Blatt is saying that “in terms of minutes”, Kyrie will be playing 38 minutes per game? and LeBron 31? If Blatt was treating it like reg season “in terms of minutes”, wouldn’t LeBron play as much as Kyrie. Or should we expect Kyrie to play 7 more minutes per game than LeBron?

      • ProBasketballPundit - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:54 PM

@truehooper1421 Yes, I think Kyrie will play more minutes than LeBron. Love too. Waiters and LeBron will probably both be around 33. Based on the minutes LeBron has logged the last four seasons with four finals runs I think he deserves a break. Let the kids do the heavy lifting.

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 3:03 PM

Ok, cool. I doubt it, but we’ll know in May lol.

  5. arrondior - Oct 21, 2014 at 9:55 AM

I think he looks better than he did before either injury in this game. More body control for sure, he’s picking how he attacks the rim so much better, and he’s shooting much better. He’ll still have quite a few off nights, but this really shows that its coming together for him. I hope he can stay healthy. Really want to see him in the play-offs.

  6. toycannoni - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM

    lol….just another pre season game

cavs dominated while playing the big 3 together for the first time

while love was rusty he dominated the boards

the king is still getting his legs in top shape and blew a couple of easy lay ups, but looked great on his perimeter jumper and the 3ball

irving looks ready to blow up this year and the supporting cast is really crashing the boards….something the king didn’t have in miami

this team is loaded ….give them 30 games together and they are going to be better than the heat w/ james, at their peak

bulls should be decent if rose can play more than 6 minutes a quarter (not sure why they still have him on a minute count) although he still looked like he still doesn’t trust his legs 100%

gasol looked old and slow out there….not sure how much help he’s going to be as the season wears on

not sure why you would miss jimmy butler’s 38% fg shooting and 28% 3 point shooting….to beat this cav team you’re going to have to score some points

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:15 AM

Jimmy Butler plays GREAT defense and makes plays that don’t show up on the stat sheet. Not sure why you only take his shooting perentage into account despite his 20 point 4th quarter the other night. It’s Ok for Love to look like trash but then you say Gasol is washed up..they both played horribly and both will play better in the reg season obviously.

Rose played 24 minutes because its PRESEASON. He had nothing to prove yet he proved a lot. And IDK what game you watched last night to make you think Rose doesn’t trust his legs lol. He would’ve dropped 50 last night if it was a real game.

I will admit, between Varajao, Thompson (who is looking good), and Love, Cavs will be a very good rebounding team. People forget how good a player like Varajao is when he is on a bad team but he is very useful on a contender.

    • svupper - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:35 AM

      Dude really?

Kyrie looked aweful against a Rose that still doesn’t trust his legs 100%. Dont get me wrong, he was great when he was up against an undersized Brooks, where he made most of his points..

And now that you’re talking about stats from last season, at least get them right, Jimmy was 39.7% FG shooting, not too far from Kyrie’s 43%

Now look at Jimmy this off-season, where he averages 59.3% FG shooting, 18.6 ppg in 29 min, not counting the game he got injured (55%, 15.8 ppg in 26 min with that game). So yeah we would miss that a lot and thats not even the main reason. Jimmy might be one of the best defenders for his position and does a lot of things you won’t see on the stat sheet, so you putting him down and basicly just talk about stats, gives me the impression that you don’t actually watch the games..

Im not saying the Cavs don’t have a great team, but just consider, that Cavs big 3 all played 30+ min, with Gasol being the only one from the Bulls, playing that much AND Jimmy was injured.. It’s gonna be looking a whole lot different, once they face eachother in the regular season..

      • toycannoni - Oct 21, 2014 at 12:02 PM

coach k must’ve saw something you missed

irving beat rose out for the pg spot and won the mvp in the world championship

this was irvings first game back in some time, and i’m sure rose had a chip on his shoulder after being beaten out for the position

loved seeing it, and you can bet lebron will be hitting irving with the jabs over the next 9 days….motivation is a good thing

like i’ve said….give the cavs some time to gel and there won’t be any competition for the eastern crown

the beast from the east will come out of cleveland when it’s all said and done

  7. mrbiz8505 - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:44 AM

Rose dominated Kyrie the same way Kyrie dominated that 3rd string PG

  8. tampajoey - Oct 21, 2014 at 10:56 AM

Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Steve Nash, Reggie Miller, John Stockton, Karl Malone and Carmelo Anthony put up great stats too but never won a championship either.

I’m glad you Chicago fans are so easily satisfied with Derek Rose’s stats and a loss.

    • svupper - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:58 AM

Yeah but 5 of those players played against Jordan and the Bulls, no wonder they never won a championship..

You could say the same thing about LeBron, except he chose to team up with Bosh and Wade to win and now Kyrie and Love..

Just look at what happend when Garnett, Pierce and Allen did that same thing..

Im pretty sure Iverson would have won a championship, had he teamed up with Garnett and Pierce..
Or Melo joining the Heat instead of LeBron?

Nash actually had a great team with Amare and Marion in their prime, but you aint gonna win a ring with Mike D calling the shots, his all offense and no defense, won’t EVER win a championship..

We could throw Durant in the mix, since he don’t have a ring either..

So please drop the constant “they never won a championship..” The exact same thing everyone said about LeBron playing for the Cavs, before he got his ring..

A lot of factors have to come in play to make that happen and IMO Bulls have most of those IF they can stay healthy..

    • chicitybulls - Oct 21, 2014 at 5:38 PM

Why are you here? Why aren’t you commenting about your heat anymore? You jumped ship? Nobody is satisfied with his stats in a PRESEASON loss. It’s about how he played and how he looked. That’s all.

      • deeballer - Oct 21, 2014 at 6:50 PM

Please don’t insult Heat fans by thinking tamponjoey is one of us. Tampa doesn’t even have a basketball team and barely a football team if you watch the Bucs play every week.

      • tampajoey - Oct 21, 2014 at 7:18 PM

I’m from Ohio. Some of us achieve success in life and move out of our parents basement and the city we were born in for opportunities and to achieve greatness within our own field.

      • chicitybulls - Oct 22, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Oh. One couldn’t tell because you were commenting on the heat so much one could only guess that you were a fan of that team. I’m sorry you had to live in your parent’s basement. Good for you though for getting out. Way to go. I do understand leaving your home town for opportunities elsewhere. However, the fact that I live in Dallas doesn’t make me dismiss my hometown or the teams I’ve followed since I was a youngun. Oh well.

  9. toycannoni - Oct 21, 2014 at 11:04 AM

no need to get upset….it’s only preseason

like i said…to beat this cav team you’re going to have to score points, butler can’t guard everyone on the court

defense will be great against some teams but you’re going to have to shoot over 50% to beat the cavs, especially the way they rebound

i said love looked rusty in his first game playing with a full team, and i said pau looked old and slow and it’s only preseason….the season doesn’t get any easier the longer it goes

gasol is 34 and has been hurt the last couple of years compared to love’s 26 and we both know what he brings on offense….

rose looked good but to have him on a minute count after 2 years of being out doesn’t make sense, unless there’s some doubt about him

he went down hard on the play before the half and watching him favor that leg going into the locker room just caught my eye….that’s all i was saying about him not being 100% sure about the leg

varejao does look rejuvenated with lebron being back and he should play a big role around the rim

the only drawback i see for the cavs, would be dion waiters and his putting up too many shots….i’m sure that will get straightened out or he’ll be coming off the bench before long

  10. rjthakid - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Why so much back and forth over a preseason game?

This game shows that Derrick Rose is still a fantastic player. That’s it. It is NOT an indicator of how either team will perform in the regular season.

The minute distribution will be different. The plays they run will be different. The effort level will be different.

    Nothing to see here. Really.

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 21, 2014 at 2:59 PM

I am back and forth more than most so I assume your comment is directed at me among others.

Personally, I have been waiting months for real basketball, preseason or not I like to talk about basketball. I don’t like either of these teams but who cares. We know it doesn’t count or mean much (although it is an indication) but we just like talking about basketball and preseason is all we have right now. I’m speaking for all commenters who are here regularly when I say this, but whether we agree or disagree, IT’S ALL IN GOOD FUN AND LOVE FOR THE NBA AND BASKETBALL.

Wow, can’t believe I keep over looking that every year :(
