Rangers’ Moore suspended five games for ‘extremely difficult’ Haula hit

Oct 29, 2014, 5:21 PM EDT

Rangers defenseman John Moore has been suspended five games for an illegal check to the head of Minnesota’s Erik Haula during Monday’s game in New York, the NHL has announced.

“The main point of contact on this hit is Haula’s head,” the NHL’s Department of Player Safety explained (video below). “It is important to note that Haula is eligible to be checked on this play, and Moore’s hit is not late — nor did Moore deliver the hit with his elbow, which flares up following contact.

“However, if Moore is to attempt this extremely difficult hit, his timing and angle of approach must ensure that he hits squarely through the body and that Haula’s head is not the main point of contact.”

Moore, who had a previous disciplinary record from hitting and injuring Montreal’s Dale Weise in last year’s playoffs, received a major penalty and game misconduct for Monday’s illegal check. Haula, meanwhile, left the game and didn’t return; while he wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion, he did miss Tuesday’s game against Boston for precautionary measures.

Both Haula’s injury and Moore’s history as a repeat offender played a part in the suspension.

Moore will now miss the Rangers’ next five games — against Winnipeg, St. Louis, Detroit, Toronto and Edmonton — and is eligible to return to the lineup on Tuesday, Nov. 11 against the Penguins.

Update: Here’s a little more from Bob McKenzie:

Well we knew a suspension was coming. Next man up !!! Go Rangers!!

  2. nicknyhc - Oct 29, 2014 at 5:54 PM

    Let me get this straight:

    – There was no penalty called on the ice

    – It wasn’t a charge

    – It wasn’t boarding

    – Moore did not leave his feet

    – It wasn’t a hit from behind

    – Huala had possesion and even Burke says he was “eligible to be hit”

    – To Burke’s admission the hit wasn’t late, and the head wasn’t the point of contact

    ….but there’s a 5 game suspension and a $50,000 fine? That’s retarded.

    • chief361 - Oct 29, 2014 at 11:04 PM

      • chief361 - Oct 29, 2014 at 11:10 PM

to which i might add, five games wasn’t enough in my opinion. should’ve been double that.

You apparently weren’t paying attention to the game nor the discipline video or related documentation. Yes, initial contact to the shoulder happened, but Burke explains that the principal point of contact was, indeed, the head. There WAS a penalty on the play, which was called immediately as a match penalty for illegal contact to the head. A 5 minute major was subsequently served by a teammate.

Stop being an ignorant Homer and pay attention to the rules and what actually happened, and not just what your imagination manufactured.

There was a penalty on the hit, and rightfully so.

That game in general was very dirty. You could be certain that AV gave the team serious lip afterwards.

There was even a play where Hagelin hit pominville into Lundqvist, and potentially could have injured Hank.

Ugly hockey on the Rangers part. Seems like this team gets rattled very easy.

    • moarjam - Oct 29, 2014 at 6:52 PM

Rattled easily? They came back from 0-3 and won the game…

    • stakex - Oct 29, 2014 at 7:06 PM

There were two iffy plays during the game, and only one in which the league felt was punishable. That does not make the game “very dirty”.

Also, as moarjam said…. I don’t know where in the world you came up with the idea that the Rangers get “rattled easy”. Not only did they come back to win the game from 3-0 and 4-2 down (rattled teams don’t do that), but the Kreider hit occurred when the game was scoreless. Lets also not forget that this is a team that went to the Cup finals last year, including a 3-1 comeback against the Pens. A couple plays in one game do not make a pattern, and they are not a sign of anything larger…. especially a sign of “being rattled”.

You know what is a sign of a team that gets rattled though? A team that blows a 3-0 lead in the 3rd period…

Failed to mention the head shot. There nickypoo

He should have saved it for Bertuzzi

    • guitarisgood4u - Oct 29, 2014 at 6:59 PM

      (sigh)

Can’t really argue with this one. Was as clear an example of a headshot as you will get…. and with the injury and Moore’s recent suspension for another head hit, it was going to be several games.

Going to be a tough five games for the Rangers considering that depth on defense was a huge issue already with Boyle out of the lineup. I guess the only good news is that their schedule isn’t as bad as it could be over the next five games.

Shoulda got more! Just happen in the playoffs last year, and again this early in the very next season! Shoulda got more. His head took the brunt of the impact and he had plenty of time to adjust to make a legal hit, therefor it was his intention to go for his head. The dude that said there was no penalty on the play is an idiot. Do some homework before you start ranting about things that you no nothing about. Good win though, recover quick Haula, your a beast! GO WILD!!!

I’m as big a Rangers fan as you will find. Moore got 5 & I think as fans we should be grateful that’s all he got.
