Roy remains confident that Avs will start winning

Even after just two wins in 10 games, Patrick Roy is staying positive.

The head coach of the Colorado Avalanche assured reporters today that his team is still “in the mix” and on track to make the playoffs, despite yesterday’s 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose that dropped the Avs’ record to 2-4-4.

“We think a good objective right now is 96 points, to be in the playoff dance,” said Roy, per the Denver Post. “And right now, we’re right there.”

With eight points from their first 10 games, the Avs are actually on pace for just 66 points in 82 games. But Roy remains confident nonetheless.

“You win two, three, four games in a row and you’re back around .600,” he said. “That should be good. But we need to do that. It’s hard to believe today, because there are holes in our game, but it will help us tremendously and I think we’re going to win those games.”

Colorado welcomes the Islanders to town Thursday, before a tough weekend has them in St. Louis Saturday and hosting Anaheim Sunday.

He could well be right, and seeing some things that arn’t showing up in the #s. I’m not going to venture a prediction, having thoroughly embarrassed myself on a recent one.

And they will do well to get 3 points in the next 3 games vs. those 3, especially playing the Blues and Ducks on a back to back.

Study of Roy’s commentary might have been fairer in this article …

Roy suggests 96 points will find the Avalanche in the playoffs, but he supports the claim with reasonable expectation his team will put-in stretches of wins in counter to the current losing run contributing to the less than .500 start.

Argument a team with the players and coaching the Avalanche have will actually maintain an average of less than .500 through a full schedule, in absence of a complete summary of Roy’s commentary, is sophistry.

I had expected them to make the playoffs before pre-season started, and am not now discounting that either. The article referred to the next 3 games, and given those specifics, I think it is unlikely that they will take a majority of points.

We saw two struggling teams get it together last year, and certainly the Aves have the ability to get back over 500.

As a long time Avs fan, I have many concerns not only regarding the lack of wins, but the blatantly boring effort I’m witnessing from this team right now. Personally, I think they are in deep poop right about now and it’s about to get even deeper over the next couple of weeks. With the exception of the Canucks game, they haven’t displayed an ounce of passion or chemistry whatsoever!!! They look horrible out there…absolutely HORRIBLE. When your best player is Jaime McGinn (whom I like a lot) night in and night out, plan on losing a ton of games.

Every year I hear how Duchene is going to have this breakout year after his summer practices with Crosby. And every year he comes back getting knocked off the puck over and over again and seems totally lost playing any defensive role. O’Reilly looks lost out there too and he’s missing the net time and time again. MacK hasn’t found his scoring touch whatsoever and even he looks lost in the shadows. The defense? Well, there’s not a single player on the team that has made a huge defensive impact so far this season. Will somebody please wake up Holden and E.J. and remind them that it’s regular season? It is getting harder and harder to watch these games the way they’re getting beat up like that. Roy and Sakic really need to figure out something to fix this mess of a team. Otherwise, we’re gonna have a long season of nothingness.

Agreed. Passionless hockey. The last 10 minutes against SJ last night was pretty good but what the hell about the other 50? I think this team doesn’t need to hear anymore positive reinforcement. They need to hear about how they are lazy, passionless and soft on the puck! And for chrissake, hit the damn net!
