Via the Detroit Red Wings, a statement from Gordie Howe’s family:

The Howe family would like to thank friends, family and fans for your overwhelming well-wishes, prayers and support for Gordie. He suffered a significant stroke on Sunday morning while at his daughter’s home in Lubbock, Texas. His condition remains guarded, although he is showing some signs of improvement. We acknowledge that there is a long road to recovery ahead, but Dad’s spirits are good and his competitive attitude remains strong.

Howe is 86 years old and was battling health issues before suffering the stroke.

The greatest to ever lace them up! The first time I met him was when I was super young. He came to our town and bought the city a small ice arena becasue his wife is from Sandusky MI, so we didnt have to play with 2×4 boards and chicken wire

I remember in the early 1960s, Gordie being asked how many more years he expected to play in the NHL. He was already well into his 30s and not many guys went much further than that. He said he hoped to play long enough that his kids would be old enough to remember seeing him play. LOL. No one would have guessed he’d play almost 20 more years and two of those kids would be his teammates. Extraordinary. And while some of his records have been eclipsed, his scoring 20 or more goals in 22 straight NHL seasons will not be threatened anytime soon.
I sure hope his family will be ducking his elbows again soon and for plenty of seasons to come.
