The oil and gas industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom in the United States. To support the development, thousands of miles of pipeline are being built, storage facilities are being proposed in sensitive locations, and the industry is looking to export gas to countries that will pay higher prices for our fossil fuels. The infrastructure drives more destructive drilling at home and exacerbates climate change across the planet.
In the northeast, oil and gas companies are proposing to build a 122-mile natural gas pipeline that will run through portions of New York and Pennsylvania, cutting across forests and watersheds and disturbing hundreds of acres of land.
Earthjustice is opposing infrastructure development by:
- Challenging the construction of new natural gas pipelines and other infrastructure, including gas storage projects that will allow more fracking-enabled gas development and jeopardize public health, safety, and sustainable local economies.
- Fighting the building of proposed liquefied natural gas export terminals that could dramatically increase foreign demand for gas, spur more drilling and increase carbon pollution.
- Challenging investment in new, unneeded gas generation capacity that could lock in reliance on fossil fuels for decades to come.
