Report: Knicks waiving Travis Outlaw to make room for Travis Wear

Toronto Raptors v New York Knicks Toronto Raptors v New York Knicks

The Knicks accepted Travis’ Outlaw’s salary in a trade in order to get Quincy Acy.

Now that Acy – an aggressive energy player – is in New York, the Knicks have little use for Outlaw. If anything, Outlaw’s $3 million salary could help facilitate a trade, but he hasn’t played effectively in a few years.

So, New York probably planned to keep Outlaw around unless someone emerged in the preseason.

Well, someone emerged in the preseason – Travis Wear, who signed as undrafted free agent from UCLA after playing for the Knicks’ summer-league team.

Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv:

The Knicks will keep Travis Wear on their 15-man roster and waive veteran Travis Outlaw, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told SNY.tv and The Knicks Blog.

Good for Wear earning a roster spot. That the Knicks would eat $3 million to get him speaks to how much he’s impressed Phil Jackson.

The biggest drawback to the move is Outlaw’s $3 million salary is stuck on the cap and can’t be traded. It will still come off the books next summer, when New York projects to have major cap space, but the Knicks lose a little flexibility in the meantime for a mid-season trade.

Phil has done great things for their roster in a very short time. At least there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kudos on cleaning up a mess.

Hmmm…Lakers probably need to look into this a.s.a.p.

A long SF who can play a little D, or at least better D then anyone we currently have on the roster….Miiiiiiiitch
    Oh Miiiii-iiiitch….

I know we need SF’s, but Outlaw? A what point we are that fans are asking Outlaw to be our savior?

Lol who said anything about a savior? We need anything that resembles defense and just in case you haven’t noticed Wes Johnson is the ONLY SF we have, so to say we need SFs is actually an understatement. Plus, who else is out there? I’d take Outlaw, I bet he would make an impact and somewhat breathe some life back into his career. He just needs the opportunity.

Not worried about this season. Only next season.

So it’s OK to throw away NBA seasons when you just invested 124 Mil in Melo. This is what cracks me up about the knicks. Its not you bro, but the whole mentality wait until next year is hilarious.

Uh, didn’t L.A. just tank a whole season in order to end up with a lottery pick, & are doing the same thing this season? Melo’s contract is irrelevant, he’s signed through 2019, they’ll compete, play to win & all that, but there’s no “wasting” a season. You win ball games & make the playoffs then good, you lose & end up with a lottery pick, then good, it’s an understanding of the bigger picture & knowing they’re not a great team this year. This is not a “knicks” thing, NBA teams do this all the time.
