In the wake of Tuesday’s OT loss in Philly — a game in which they played a man down due to cap issues — the Los Angeles Kings have brought up David Van der Gulik from AHL Manchester as an emergency recall.

L.A. found itself shorthanded this week after Anze Kopitar was unable to face the Flyers due to injury. With Slava Voynov suspended indefinitely (but still on the books) and Marian Gaborik and Trevor Lewis on IR, the Kings found themselves pressed too closely to the salary cap ceiling to call up an extra body from the Monarchs.

So, they played with 11 forwards in Philly.

Here’s a further explanation of the Van der Gulik call-up, per L.A. Kings Insider:

Because the Kings dressed only 19 players in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime loss in Philadelphia, they are eligible to use an emergency recall on a player who carries a cap hit of under $650,000, via Article 50.10 of the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement.

That recall will be used on 5-foot-10, 173-pound David Van der Gulik, who has 13 points (2-11=13) in 48 career NHL games with Colorado and Calgary and carries a $550,000 cap hit. The Kings were not able to use the emergency recall on center Jordan Weal, whose $610,000 cap hit would have been pushed above the maximum provided by Article 50.10 due to bonuses based on games played.

Van der Gulik can play center or wing, so it’s possible he’ll draw in tonight — though that largely depends on Kopitar’s availability. Kopitar was hurt on Sunday against Columbus and suggested he’d miss both the Philly and Pittsburgh games, telling the L.A. Times “I don’t want to push it.”

Meanwhile, half the Blue Jackets roster is still on IR. Oh, what they’d give to have the Kings’ “problems”…
