Video: Despres drills Couturier, has to answer in fight with Umberger

Oct 22, 2014, 10:13 PM EDT

Simon Despres drew the ire of the referees and the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman caught Flyers’ forward Sean Couturier with a hard hit in the corner late in the first period, as the two long-time rivals squared off in an Eastern Conference match-up. Despres was called for interference – choosing to leave the puck alone entirely when he had a chance to play it instead of the body – on the hit.

Couturier remained in the game. Despres received a minor penalty.

But he was forced to answer to Flyers’ veteran center R.J. Umberger, who immediately challenged Despres to drop the gloves. The fight didn’t last long.

Yet another sign these teams really don’t like each other.
