Parent Roundtable and Katy Improvement Council representative Laura Freeman will present to the Katy Independent School District board of trustees feedback on a potential district contingency plan, should the November 2014 bond fail, during the monthly work study on Oct. 20.

The work study board meeting will be in the Katy ISD ESC Board Room located at 6301 S. Stadium Lane in Katy beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Last month, at the request of four Katy ISD Advisory Committees, district officials presented a summary of tools and options to accommodate the nearly 3,000 new students coming to Katy ISD every year if the bond referendum, which includes funds to build six new schools, is not approved by voters this November.

District officials researched neighboring school districts, facing similar growth, to compile a list of alternatives that could potentially be implemented in Katy to provide temporary relief to overcrowded campuses.

Possible alternatives for managing growth over the next couple years were discussed with more than a hundred parents, community members and staff at the advisory committee meetings. Committee members were also given the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed alternatives, as well as identify other options for managing growth should the bond fail.

Such alternatives include additional portable classrooms, attendance boundary modifications, class size increases and program evaluation of non-mandatory programs, among others.

The $748 million bond referendum, if approved, will provide six new campuses and renovations for nearly 50 district facilities which will add approximately 9,000 new classroom seats throughout Katy. The bond referendum also includes funding for a second stadium.
