BOSTON – Two days ago, Rajon Rondo gave himself a 79 percent chance of playing in the Celtics’ season opener. By yesterday, it was 83 percent.

Today?

“100,” Boston coach Brad Stevens said.

Rondo – who broke his hand before training camp, an injury expected to keep him out into November – will start for the Celtics against the Nets tonight. Just as he’d hoped.

Rondo’s quicker-than-expected return allows Boston to starting playing rookie Marcus Smart or wing Evan Turner at point guard. Obviously, Rondo, who will have no minutes restriction, is the far superior option.

If Rondo’s Celtics’ supporting cast comes around to support him, Boston has at least an outside chance of pushing for a playoff berth. Without Rondo, those odds were practically zero.

Nets coach Lionel Hollins, whose own team can’t squander opportunities to collect wins and still make the postseason, said he wasn’t surprised to see Rondo back already.

“He’s a good player,” Hollins said. “So, you’ve got to deal with him.”

Celtics were up 20+ points at halftime. I was at this game and it was pretty awesome. Some highlights: Garnett was treated like the Celtic we will always remember him as. He gave it up to the crowd before tip off and he was cheered coming and going from the bench. Lots of “K….G!” chants happening. The energy at the Garden was amazing. Jared Sullinger was the dominant big man he was drafted to be and Bradley had the outside shot humming. Fantastic home opener and made me proud to be a Boston sports fan tonight.

Great pic of Rondo and his giant hands.
