Report: Magic would vote for proposal to change lottery

2013 NBA Draft Lottery 2013 NBA Draft Lottery

NBA lottery reform is comingprobably sooner than later.

The 76ers, despite what their owner says is best for his team in the long run, are reportedly fighting a proposal to reduce the lottery odds for the NBA’s worst teams.

If Philadelphia has a chance to defeat this proposal – and I don’t think it does – it will need to build a coalition of opposition among:

  • Teams, like the 76ers themselves, that will be very bad in the short term
  • Teams in line to send or receive protected draft picks that lose value if the setup changes
  • Teams principally opposed to drastically changing the rules with such immediacy

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel:

The Orlando Magic support a proposal to reform the NBA Draft Lottery in which the teams with the four worst overall records would have nearly identical chances to win the top overall pick, according to an industry source with knowledge of the Magic’s thinking.

If the 76ers can’t get Orlando on their side, who can get they get?

In the last two years, the Magic have finished with the NBA’s worst and third-worst record. They’re projected to finish in the same range this year, especially since two of their top players – Victor Oladipo and Channing Fryesprained an MCL.

This just illustrates the problem the 76ers face in battling this proposal. Every team outside Philadelphia believes its good enough to finish above the basement. Some are delusional – see the Magic – but only the 76ers have so willingly embraced long-term tanking to the point they lack preseason optimism.

There just aren’t enough teams involved with protected picks, and probably even fewer would take an ethical stance against changing the rules on the fly.

Philadelphia will just have to takes it medicine if this comes to a vote.

Really…aren’t the Sixers (as others before them did) just following the draft rules that the NBA put in place?

I love how they are reacting to the Sixers who still have yet to have the worst record in the league nor have they received a number one pick. Last year, they didn’t even get the 2nd pick after finishing second worst. This is completely asenine and unnecessary.

Win games quit tanking maybe they should be contracted they will never win anything anyway and take about five other teams with them to contract Min, Sac, NO move the Raptors to Seattle no NBA teams need to be in Canada.

Sam HInkie has only been on the job for less then 18 months. What was he going to do with the horrible roster he inherited? Long gone from the former regime that traded away vucevic, Harkless, Iguaodala and a 1 pick for Bynam. I guess HInkie was just obligated to resign Bynum, Swaggy P, Dorell Wright, kwame browm for the good of the game. His first draft he traded Drew Holliday a suspect and only reason he was an all star was because other pg were hurt that year for Nerlen Noels, Dario Saric from the pelicans pick got a 1st round pick back and a second round pick coming from hosing the Orlando Magic in his second draft. He also drafted MCW the rookie of the year in a bad draft class. That right there is a bank robbery. In his first season at the helm what he should of kept Turner, Hawes, and Allen at the trade deadline? Come on those three are all bums and not that good. 2nd draft he took embiid with the third pick? Who would you taken instead? Embiid has the most upside of any rookie in the class. I guess they should drafted someone who could play this year like gordan and mc buckets at 10 instaed of taking the best players for the good of the game not for the sixers. They also got the best young Euopean prospect in Saric who would of gone higher in the draft if he didn’t sign the 2 year contract. Sam Hinkie Traded Thad Young who was going to leave at the end of this year for a 1st round Miami pick 2 expiring contracts and a player mbah a moute who is his country men of embiid to help him out and mentor coming into the league. Sam Hinkie has also got us out of all bad contracts on this team and created mass salary cap for the future in 18 months. Change the rules of the Lottery if the NBA wants to but at the end of the day Sam Hinkie is going to out smart most GM in the game with the new rules. I guess all these rule changes would not be happening if Sam HInkie was just smarter and Kept Drue Holliday, Lavoy Allen, Thad Young, signed Dorrell Wright, Swaggy P, Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes, Kwame Brown, Andrew Bynum and have no cap space. What was Sam HInkie Thinking?? Come on the real reason the other owners, GM’s, Coaches are mad is because of the collusion between HInkie, Brown, Harris. Most GM’s in a rebuild don’t get the time to be patient and they take short cuts or get fired. If the coach doesn’t win or the fans don’t pack the house the owner makes changes. Sam Hinkie and Brett Brown have no pressure of being fired for the next couple of years no matter what the sixers record is this year. Also our owner bought the sixers for $280 million with the clippers being sold for 2 billion and small market bucks being sold for 550 million add in the new tv deal and being in the 4 largest media market in the US the sixiers are easily worth 700 million now. Imagine if this plan works and there good how much they will be worth? That is why he doesn’t care about loosing now to be winners in the future.

Still not sure how this is supposed to stop teams from tanking….

    • Damidwesterner - Oct 17, 2014 at 10:48 PM

Probably tank to get down to the lottery level, but not have to tank all the way to the bottom.
However, the bottom line is that if some team seriously is so crappy that they finish last, they really have no recourse in the draft.
