Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter to miss Spurs’ season opener

The San Antonio Spurs will receive their championship rings on Tuesday night, but the Finals MVP will not be suiting up. The team announced that Kawhi Leonard will miss the Spurs’ season opener against the Dallas Mavericks with an infection in his right eye that has kept him out for most of training camp.

Starting center Tiago Splitter will also miss the game with a right calf strain.

In other words, the Spurs are back in action. They’ve well established by now that the regular season doesn’t matter to them, so if there’s any doubt that someone can play, Gregg Popovich is going to hold them out. Still, it’s a bummer that we won’t get to see the defending champions at full strength for a rematch of what was one of the more entertaining first-round playoff series last year.

Kawhi’ s eye infection is legit, Splitter may be hurt but he’s not a big loss like #2/The Spurs need another Big Man to help our Timmy, they have too many Via D’s and Swingmen!

Splitter’s D on Dirk will be missed for sure.
Diaw is a capable defender for sure, but he doesn’t really have the length to bother Dirk’s shot.
