They were both employed by Central Texas Iron Works in Waco. Robert was married with two children. He was a volunteer firefighter who responded to the fire. He was on his way to assist firefighters when he died in the explosion. He was in West taking an emergency medical technician class when the fire broke out and rushed to the site. Lander, 96 Mr. Landers was a veteran of World War II and retired farmer. He lived in the nursing home that was severely damaged by the explosion. Mariano C. Saldivar, 57 Mr. Saldivar was an immigrant from Mexico who had previously worked in California. He had retired in West five years ago and lived in the apartment complex that was destroyed by the blast. He was married with four children.
