A 71-year-old man fatally shot a would-be robber who knocked down his wife and tried to steal her necklace in a Dallas grocery store parking lot Tuesday night, police say.

Ronnie Lummus and his wife were leaving the Aldi grocery store on the 3100 block of Forest Lane at about 7:20 p.m. when a 36-year-old man approached the woman, grabbed her gold necklace and knocked her down, according to police.

Lummus, who had a concealed handgun, fired multiple shots at the man, striking him as he tried to flee in his nearby vehicle, police said. The man succumbed to his injuries, though, and collided with a parked vehicle.

Dallas Police Department officials said Lummus has a valid concealed handgun license. He, his wife and witnesses told police that the shooting was in self-defense.

Lummus was released on his own recognizance and police said the shooting will be referred to the grand jury.

Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the Latino man.
