Lakers’ rookie Julius Randle has surgery to repair fractured tibia, out for season

Oct 29, 2014, 5:08 PM EDT

What everyone both feared and expected is now official.

It’s a punch to the gut of Lakers fans. This was already going to be a rough season — as evidenced by how easily the Rockets handled them opening night — but the growth and maturation of Randle was one of the hopes for the future. Watching him was going to be a bright spot this season. Now he is out for the year on what was a fairly innocent-looking play at the time.

Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $200,000 Fantasy Basketball league for October 29th’s games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $20,000. Starts at 7pm ET on October 29th. Here’s the FanDuellink.

Randle is the second Laker to be out for the season, veteran point guard Steve Nash already had been sidelined due to his ongoing nerve/back issues.

For we basketball fans, this injury just sucks to see. Hope his recovery goes well and he is back on the court next fall.

Yea that was a really innocent looking play, even on the replays I don’t see how he broke his foot.

Looks like he kicked his own leg causing the fracture. Once he gathers his dribble and takes the two steps you see his left leg almost trip over his right leg and after that motion you can see how his leg begins to flail in the air.

        Pretty random.

Damn, that’s tough man. I feel extremely bad for that kid. He seemed like he was hungry and always played hard like he had something to prove. Too bad. At least it happened after he was drafted and not while he was still in college.

Anybody remember a few years back in NCAA tournament and Da’Sean Butler from West Virginia tore his acl in his last game, when his team had already basically lost (down 15 with 9mins to go)? Crushed any possible chance of him being drafted.

He actually got drafted by the Heat if I’m not mistaken, but got cut. Yeah, I remember that. Sad too. I really felt like he belonged in the league too.

David stern set the lakers back 10 years and I will never let anyone forget it

With the CP3 deal? There’s a lot of people who dislike the Lakers but that deal definitely should’ve been allowed.

      It’s a lie.
The Lakers front office set them back

There were three teams involved in that trade an all had to move on.
The very next season while the Rockets and Pelicans were expected to finish at the bottom of the conference, the Lakers had a potential championship lineup with 5 current or former All-Stars.
However they failed epically due to injuries and horrible mismanagement.

So instead of blaming Stern, try blaming the genius who hired Mike D’Antoni to coach that roster.

Looked like he kicked himself after being pushed off balance as he drove. His right leg was planted but his torso was rotating counter-clockwise from the contact so as his left leg went to continue the step thru it instead impacted his right leg. Tough blow for him and the team, another injury exception coming?

I suppose it might be in their best interest considering the constant state of decimation the roster can’t escape. Lakers aren’t even allowed to have even a small ray of hope it seems.

I hate the Lakers as much as anybody but you don’t like to see anything like this happen.

    Get well, kid.

Gary Vitti explaining his procedure in photo above:

    “I’m gonna twist your foot.
If you cry out in pain,
    something’s probably broke.”
