Chandler Parsons struggles in debut with Mavericks

Chandler Parsons was the big offseason acquisition in Dallas, and was the recipient of a three-year deal worth $46 million that the Rockets later called “untradeable,” and refused to match.

After just one game, Houston looks like it made a wise decision.

Parsons seemed to be pressing early before becoming tentative late, and finished with just five points on 2-of-10 shooting in almost 34 minutes of action. He also missed a wide-open look at what would have been the game-winning shot.

From Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News:

“It was just one of those games,” Parsons said. “It sucks to play that way in the first one, but it’s only one of 82 games. It’s going to take some time getting used to playing with everybody. It was one of those nights where I couldn’t get anything to fall. I just gotta be better.

“I took good shots. I missed a couple cheapies at the rim and a couple wide-open threes. I ‘ll take those every game.”

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle, who apologized for being critical of Parsons’ weight during training camp, was nothing but supportive after this one.

“He’s going to be fine,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “I like an awful lot of the things he did do. It’s one game. He’ll bounce back on Thursday and we’re all going to play better.”

It’s going to take some time for Parsons to get used to his new role playing alongside completely new teammates, and it’s possible that opening night jitters, along with playing against the defending champs on national television simply had him on edge more than usual.

And the good news for Mavericks fans is that even with Parsons playing far below expectations, they had a chance to win on the road in the closing seconds against one of the league’s top teams.

    It’s one freaking game dude…

    • csbanter - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:38 PM

PBT lives off of sensational headlines. This is a non story today. So he had an off night, big deal.

      • avb300 - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:52 PM

I don’t think they’re exaggerating with the headline, Parsons was really tentative and if he was just 3 for 10, they win. That 3 by Parker was insanely clutch though.

Parsons has absolutely no arc on his shot it’s ridiculous. He’s a good shooter even with bad arc, better than many shooters, so he gets away with it but it’s almost like a laser beam.

He had at least one three that was a bullet and went in and out. He should really work on improving his shot. If Dirk worked on his shot this past summer, who is Parsons not to?

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:55 PM

        Headlines? What’s wrong with it?

Parsons did struggle in his debut. why do people talk ish for nbo reason?

      • timberwolvesbrisin - Oct 29, 2014 at 2:37 PM

I had no issue with the headline per se…

It is this nonsense “After just one game, Houston looks like it made a wise decision,” that I took issue with.

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 2:55 PM

@timberwolves…Wasn’t responding to you but csbanter

  2. andrewwiggins22 - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:42 PM

i wonder if C Parsons actually paid for their dinner last night but with his performance, I really think he should have.

  3. mackcarrington - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:53 PM

    Carlisle was right.
If Parsons wasn’t overweight and focused on taking shirtless selfies he would have hit the game winning shot.

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:56 PM

uhh, I doubt any selfies he took had anything to do with that shot last night.

      • mackcarrington - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:14 PM

Uhh, I doubt you have any clue as to when I’m being sarcastic.

  4. truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:54 PM

He should have swung that game winning shot to Monte..

    • andrewwiggins22 - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:55 PM

      Who’s Monte? Lol!

      • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 3:02 PM

        Nice

  5. trueballs - Oct 29, 2014 at 12:57 PM

Carlisle was absolutely right about Parsons’ weight though. He was short all night..that last heave looked short before it left his hands. no lift.

  6. xLith - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:22 PM

Meanwhile for those of you who down-voted me when I said Ariza was an upgrade over Parsons…

    Trevor Ariza
    5-10 fg, .500, 5-8 3P, 3 reb, 2 stl, 2ast. 16 pts

    • xLith - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:30 PM

I forgot to add he sat out almost the entire 4th quarter too.

Keep the down-votes coming. Sorry you can’t accept facts.

      • timberwolvesbrisin - Oct 29, 2014 at 2:53 PM

        yah, one game…case closed bro!

You could be right, but too early to say.

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 3:03 PM

You excited over one game? Let’s not forget, Parsons played against the Spurs. Ariza played against the Lakers LMAO what a joke that you couldn’t wait to say that lol

      • ddarqwon - Oct 29, 2014 at 10:21 PM

        Well also consider this:

Parsons played the Spurs WITHOUT Kawhi Leonard.
Ariza also had the task of guarding Kobe all night (and did a damn good job).

Kinda evens things out in my eyes.

    • arrondior - Oct 29, 2014 at 7:02 PM

      Dear Xlith,

      The Rockets played the Lakers….

      Your truly,

      Arron

  7. biggredbird76 - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:22 PM

    And Ariza hit 5 threes.

  8. azarkhan - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:23 PM

“After just one game, Houston looks like it made a wise decision.”

After one game in a 82 game season, you feel qualified to write off Chandler Parsons? LOL!

    • xLith - Oct 29, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Houston has seen what he can do. Might be one game, but it’s not his rookie season. He’s a streaky shooter. More often then not, you’ll be seeing him shooting flat and clanging off the rim.

  9. savvybynature - Oct 29, 2014 at 2:00 PM

I thought he looked pretty good out there, other than his shot not falling.
He certainly looked springy and athletic, two attributes Dallas needs on the wing. His defense also looked more active than I remember, and he did a good job positioning himself early to help and anticipating passes.
It was just one game, but I agree with Carlisle’s assessment more than PBTs.

  10. spursareold - Oct 29, 2014 at 2:32 PM

Parsons is INSANELY overrated, and has been since he got to Houston. His three season composite PER, an offensively weighted stat, is 15.0. That is dead spot on LEAGUE AVERAGE.

    • truehooper1421 - Oct 29, 2014 at 3:04 PM

Since he got to Houston? Def wrong about that, clearly he was underrated look at where he was drafted.

  11. jsala02 - Oct 29, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Chandler Parsons said he left Houston because they wanted a 3rd superstar and didn’t think they considered him the 3rd superstar, but he thought he was. He is not a superstar, he had very high value because he was on a 2nd round pick contract, now that he is making almost the max, he will struggle to live up to that contract. It wont hurt Dallas though, since Dirk took less, it all evens out moneywise for them. For Houston, Ariza will be a lateral move and since they saved a little cash, I don’t think it will hurt as much as the “experts” think.

    • ddarqwon - Oct 29, 2014 at 10:37 PM

      Spot on.
The one thing I would add is that Ariza is certainly a defensive upgrade which was an area of need for the Rockets.
I’ve been saying all along that the move was, at minimum, a wash with Houston having the edge if you consider the contracts.
