This week, to get ready for Halloween, we’ll be publishing only scary editions of Test Yourself, using articles like the one below from 2013, which was written by a man who spent the night at an old mental hospital rumored to be haunted.

Below are the first seven paragraphs of “Getting Into the Spirit.”

Can you choose the best word for each blank?

When you’re finished, you’ll find a link to the full article.

I’m afraid of spiders because they’re everywhere and can lay eggs on you and eat you alive if they really wanted. I don’t share any of the fears on the Op-Talk its just spiders that I’m afraid of. I don’t have any phobias at all. I think that being afraid of spiders is rational. I usually just kill every spider I see and that’s how I deal with my fear of them. Personally I hate being scared; it’s a horrible feeling to have.

I don’t like spiders. They really scare me with those eight legs of theirs. I’m afraid to kill them because I’m afraid that they will jump up and bite me. I don’t know if I’m still scared of haunted houses, I guess I will find out this weekend. Last time I went to a haunted house in third grade I was scared out of my mind but didn’t cry. After we got out into the car I screamed “LOCK THE DOORS LOCK THE DOORS!” And then I started crying my eyes out. I’m also scared out of my mind of clowns. I saw one at the circus and I hid under my blanket. Sometimes I like to be scared, other times not so much. I’m a dressed as a hippie and hippies like peace.
