Another restaurant is coming to the Dallas Farmers Market, this one with a Southern theme. Called Jack's Modern Southern Kitchen, it's the latest venture from veteran restaurateur Scott Jones.

Local diners will recognize Jones for restaurants such as Screen Door at One Arts Plaza and Cowtown Diner in Fort Worth. But this new spot is the next step from his most previous restaurant, Jack's Southern Comfort Food, which he opened in October 2012 on Greenville Avenue.

Unfortunately for fans of his biscuits and other Southern specialties, Jones was forced to close his restaurant in July 2013 due to parking issues. But in response to customer demand, Jones continued to sell some of his items through Artizone.

For the Farmers Market spot, Jones says the Jack's menu and concept will evolve — thus the "modern" tag.

"I'll treat it both as a takeout market and with service for the residential community downtown, and add fresher things to the menu, including a lot of salads and seasonable vegetables," he says. "We weren't able to do a lot at Greenville because we were limited by the small size of the kitchen.

"I have a 'Southern Comfort' line of food and retail items for sale, so I'll add a few low-fat/healthy Southern Comfort foods."

He says he's thrilled to join the Farmers Market family. "When I heard about this almost two years ago, I knew it was my kind of thing," he says. "I know they're being particular about the balance of restaurants they want. I'm on cloud nine."

Construction is set to begin in January, with a grand opening scheduled for mid-April — "perfect for springtime," he says. It'll be a food court setup with communal seating. Customers will order at the counter and eat it on the premises or take it to go.

"For me, this is a perfect fit," he says.
