Candidate Profile: Steve Adler

Updated: Wednesday, October 29 2014, 04:00 PM CDT

To learn more about the candidates running for mayor of Austin, KEYE TV's Fred Cantu decided to interview them as if he were interviewing them for a job.

The Q&A with Steve Adler went like this:

Q: What are your priorities if you get the job?

A: "Traffic and affordability, the permitting process, we should be supporting education more than we are.  We need to reform the property tax system.  We have some pretty serious challenges and with the new 10-1 government we have the opportunity to remake government culture with new leaders and communities sitting at the table for the very first time.

Q: How does your job experience qualify you?

A: "I've worked with land development codes around the state and we're re-doing Austin's land development code. I did policy work on fair taxation issues and certainly property tax is an important issue in this city.  So substantively I have experience with lots of issues that will be real important with the city."

Q: What about leadership?  Can you work well with others?

A: "I helped bring the Anti-Defamation League to Austin and brought the No Place For Hate program here that is now in over 300 schools.  In the 10 years at the legislature I had to bring together people on different sides of policy issues in order to forge compromises.

Q: Are you sure you want the job?

A: "I think it's going to be very exciting. A new start. And I want to be part of it."

Early voting continues through Oct. 31.  Election Day is Nov. 4.
