Friday, August 01, 2014 Austin, Texas EditorialIsrael’s Rights Must Be Defended
It's difficult to imagine the terror that the people of Israel must live with every day. For Israelis, at any given moment a missile might be detected, rocketing toward a residential neighborhood; a bomber might detonate him or herself in a crowded public place; and terrorists sent by Hamas might infiltrate their borders through secret tunnels to kidnap or kill their children. -
Friday, July 11, 2014 Austin Texas EditorialSecuring the Border Must be Top Priority
President Obama's appropriations request only deals with one aspect of the current crisis on our southern border, while barely addressing its root cause: an unsecured border. -
Thursday, July 10, 2014 Austin, Texas EditorialTexas Clear Winner in Red State-Blue State Comparison
In 2011, Illinois and Texas each faced a challenging legislative session. The national recession had damaged both states’ economies, and revenues were projected to be insufficient to cover anticipated spending. What happened next is a clear demonstration of the differences between “blue states” and “red states.” In Texas, we prioritized our spending, identified areas where we could save, and made the tough choices about where we would cut. We turned in a budget that was balanced, that met the most critical needs, and did not raise taxes on anyone. Illinois, meanwhile, raised taxes. -
Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Austin, Texas EditorialOp-Ed: The Human Cost of Failed Border Policies
"The very real human consequences of our country’s lax border security and muddled immigration policies huddled right there, under an open shelter in the stifling Texas heat." -
Sunday, March 09, 2014 Austin, Texas EditorialTexas is Home to A Vibrant Creative Culture
Some people like to say this is the time of year when creative folks converge on Texas. I say, they’re here all the time. Granted, the numbers increase a bit for SXSW, Austin’s annual technology, film and music conference. But historically, Texas has always been home to people with innovative spirits and unique talents. -
Monday, February 03, 2014 Austin, Texas EditorialTalking Texas In Switzerland
Today, no discussion of the world’s economy or economic future is truly complete without including the State of Texas. That’s a point I made last week as I met with global leaders in business and government at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. If I made nothing else clear, it’s that Texas has emerged as a critical figure on the world stage. -
Tuesday, November 05, 2013 Austin, Texas EditorialBringing Texas Closer to the Rest of The World
The link between Israel and Texas is as strong as ever, and I was honored to be in the Holy Land recently to witness critical new milestones in the deepening of our relationship. -
Monday, May 13, 2013 Austin, Texas EditorialAbout Those Jobs, President Obama...
Like many families and employers, President Obama has heard about the Texas success story, where we free job creators to grow their businesses and give families and hardworking taxpayers unlimited opportunity to keep more of their hard-earned money and a live a better life. -
Friday, March 29, 2013 Austin, Texas EditorialMedicaid Expansion a Bad Idea
Of all the bad ideas related to Obamacare, depending upon Medicaid to do the heavy lifting to 'insure' Americans is about the worst of the bunch. -
Friday, November 23, 2012 Austin, Texas EditorialSaying No to a Really Bad Idea
It’s really far past time for us to call Obamacare what it truly is: an unprecedented government overreach into every American's life, forcing higher costs onto individuals, practitioners, employers and state governments in lieu of actually fixing our healthcare system. -
Thursday, November 01, 2012 Austin, Texas EditorialAdult Stem Cells Can Revolutionize Medicine, The World
Growing replacement organs. Spinal regeneration. Repairing cardiac tissue in the aftermath of a heart attack. These ideas have belonged to the realm of science fiction for generations, but all are now realistic goals, thanks to groundbreaking research in the field of adult stem cells. -
Monday, October 08, 2012 Austin, Texas EditorialHigher Ed Must Be Accessible For All Texans
As interest in pursuing a college degree is increasing, state officials have to do everything we can to remove the roadblocks and enable students to pursue their dreams. That's why I'm calling for a four-year tuition freeze for incoming freshmen, so that the amount students pay when they first arrive on campus will be locked in through what should be their senior year. Not only will this help students and their families predict and plan for the cost of their college careers, it will also provide a powerful incentive to complete degrees on time. -
Wednesday, July 11, 2012 Austin, Texas EditorialWe Need Real Reform, Not More Medicaid
Expecting to extend quality health care access to millions of Americans by pressing them into the existing Medicaid system is a little like expecting to win the Indy 500 in a 1965 Chevy Corvair. It's just not the right tool for the job. A fundamental flaw in the Obama Administration's government health care plan is that Medicaid is already on the brink of failure. Dumping millions more individuals into the Medicaid mix will not save it, will not cut any costs, and will not improve overall access to quality care.
