Adam Medrano, Candidate for Oak Lawn's Council Seat, Won't Say If He's Gay. Should He?

adammedrano.jpg
In her time in office, Councilwoman Pauline Medrano has established herself as a staunch ally of the LGBT community. That's more or less a requirement for election in District 2, which includes much of Oak Lawn and has a sizable, and politically active, gay population, and there's no reason to think her nephew, Adam Medrano, would do otherwise if he's elected to replace her.

But the junior Medrano is at the center of an interesting dynamic in the race. One of his opponents, Herschel Weisfeld, is openly gay. (Note: In the original post we wrote that another candidate, Vernon Franko, is also openly gay based on a report Friday in the Dallas Voice. He wrote to say that he's not openly gay and has never said he is. "I'm just 'Openly Vern,'" he writes. We really, really regret the error.) And the Dallas Voice has a rather lengthy piece today speculating that Medrano himself is gay.

The piece centers on a December 2000 incident, which was brought to light by the Morning News during Medrano's first bid for the Dallas ISD school board seven years ago. Medrano was charged with evading arrest after fleeing a Dillard's restroom at NorthPark, where a police officer suspected Medrano and two other men had been engaged in sexual activity.

Medrano has said he was in the bathroom to use the toilet and got spooked when he emerged from his stall to find a police officer ordering him to line up alongside the other men. But the Voice thinks there might be more to the story, and asked Medrano to address his sexual orientation. He declined, telling the paper that he doesn't "think sexual orientation is an issue in the race."

Whether he's attracted to men, women, or both is his own business and has no bearing fitness to serve on the City Council. But whether he likes it or not, it's going to be an issue in the race. There's an argument, which the Voice highlights in the piece, that gay public figures have a responsibility to come out in order to set an example and help promote acceptance in mainstream culture.

Weisfeld couches it in less strident terms, saying only, "I think he needs to be open and honest about who he is, as I am."

Of course that's what Medrano's openly gay political opponent would say. What remains to be seen is if District 2 voters see Medrano's reluctance to discuss his sexual orientation as a reasonable preservation of personal privacy or an act of dishonesty or cowardice.

This is so stupid! You guys need to get off his back. He obviously wants his personal life private, to prevent assholes from writing and start shit about him. He wants everyone to focus on what he wants them to see. He is a great addition to the Council .

Reading this headline" Councilwoman Vonciel Hill Wants to Remind Everyone She's Anti-Gay "

is sad to see. Now days... who cares if you are or aren't?!

If someone is bombing people and really doing harm to you, (Boston Bombing, 9/11, etc) then you have something negative to say. This guy, Adam Medrano, obviously has done nothing wrong. As for "The Voice" newpaper & LGBT Community, aren't you tired of being looked down on, picked on, tired of being treated different? Why would you pass it onto to someone else or even add gas to the fire? You need to stand proud and support. If he is or isn't, he deserves to be on the front page. HE SUPPORTS YOU! SUPPORT HIM!

GO Adam!

The better questions to ask Running Man is why his record at Ross Avenue is so darned lousy. He allowed Todd Williams to close an exemplary neighborhood school, Bonham, over the objections of Medrano's constituents. He raised no objections to the fraud from Colorado Springs when simple due diligence would have shown Mike Miles is the biggest liability ever chosen superintendent. DISD's best teachers are in job hunting mode.

Can anyone point to one single thing Medrano has done on the board to improve education for Dallas kids? Has he raised any complaints about the massive overspending on administrators? Did he raise an eyebrow when Sprague hit town? Or does he just occupy space?

By the way, closing those schools didn't accomplish anything. Miles has already overspent the budget by more than $10 million and will continue to blow through money. The neighborhood that loved Bonham, well, they just took it on the chin because Todd Williams counts much more than parents and kids.

Won't be voting for Running Man after he sold out his community.

This story has been beaten to death over and over again in every newspaper in Dallas for years. At 24, 13 years ago Adam comes out of a bathroom stall, alone, and the police are in there rounding men up for suspected sexual activity. Well just about every gay man and everyone who reads a newspaper can tell you about the reputation of Dallas Police back in the days when they were known for entrapment. Hell I can remember raids on gay bars with trumped up charges many times in the 70’s and 80’s.Knowing I wasn’t guilty of what the officers were accusing me of, I too probably would have ran.

Adam pleaded guilty to evading arrest and served his sentence. So should we continue to pull the story out every time he runs for office? Is our penal system set up to punish someone for something over and over again after they’ve served their sentencing?NO it’s not.

As a personal friend of Adams for many years I’ll tell you why I’m supporting him in his run for City Council.First of all he grew up in the District. He was raised by values set by his grandparents; you treat all people the same regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion or social background. You help those less fortunate than yourself and you volunteer in your community to make it the safest and best place to live. Those are values he was raised with, those are the values he has exercised over the years. I’ve experienced it first hand.

Just because District 2 in Dallas is a heavily gay district doesn’t necessarily mean the City Council is best served by a gay candidate. It’s best served by a candidate that has a proven track record of service to the community that includes supporting LGBT issues.

I’ve screened every candidate in the race for District 2 because I live in the district. The other two candidates are “out” gay men and Adam has a much better history of public service in the district including LGBT rights. He voted in favor of LGBT-inclusive policies prohibiting bullying and harassment as a member of the Dallas school board and worked with LGBT organizations on the issues to be sure it passed.

Adam has also worked in the district with kids to keep them off them off the streets and involved in basketball and activities that keep them busy.He shows up with an entourage of kids and friends at neighborhood clean-ups, graffiti abatement and other projects that communities work on to keep their streets safe and clean.

The bottom line, is leave the gossip to the National Enquirer, get involved, interview the candidates that you think would best serve your community and VOTE.That’s what I did and I’ll be voting for Adam in the upcoming race because he has proven to me that he is the best candidate. If he wasn’t I certainly wouldn’t vote for him because I do my homework before I vote.

I agree that sexuality should not be an issue in a campaign. I'm really not sure what to make of these articles though. However, I think Adam is not going to be able to avoid the kinds of questions that will inevitably be asked about the Dillards bathroom incident and its impact on his honesty, integrity and credibility. Avoidance of the questions may be the only courseof action recommended by Pauline.

I think  the more important question is whether ineffective leadership at a failing DISD, now rated the 6'th worst performing public school system in the United States, is a prerequisite to Council Service. It seems to me an insane proposition that demonstrated failure in leadership ability at the DISD, is somehow going to translate to success at the City Council level.

Absolutely the wrong questions are being asked.  He has the right to not comment on his sexuality but he evaded an arrest during a vice sting at a NorthPark mall restroom that is notorious!  Come on, he was startled when he saw a cop, no he was CAUGHT.  This is the type of POS Oak Lawn does not need representing them.

MikeWestEast
MikeWestEast

The real question is why would you vote for someone whose major public service asset is 7 years on the DISD board. Is that group really an incubator for making someone more capable for higher office? It would seem to be a place to learn the wrong way. Since he was President, wasn't doing it the wrong way really his way.

Hey Vern is gay?

Resident of District 2.  I believe outing of public figures is only appropriate if they use their public influence to harm gay men and women.  For example, outing of Robert Jeffress, if he happens to be gay, is, I think, fair game.

I know of no reason why Medrano should have to reveal his sexual preference or even have the question raised.

cantkeepthetruthdown

The wrong questions are being asked of people who are running for public service.

There are far more important questions that should be asked here(if the reporters in this town had any sack). Here are some:

As someone who disobeyed a police officer and  was accused of evading arrest.. why do you feel qualified to represent the people district 2?

Did you use political connections to avoid punishment in that case? What was the resolution?

Has the Medrano family not been feeding from the Dallas public trough long enough? What is the point of term limiting council members if we are just going to elect these shady dynasties anyway?

Sorry but Medrano and her other family members have pulled some sketchy shit and it's time they were called on it.

Imagining the uproar if Mr. Medrano were running for city council in Plano and this exact same question were being asked of him.

He is under no obligation to reveal his orientation but as a out gay man that will be voting in the district along with a lot of out gay people his unwillingness to reveal a basic aspect of his life gives me concern about his overall integrity as a person.

I don't really care if he is gay or not, it's not going to change how I vote but I do take issue with his inability to share basic facts about himself as a matter of personal integrity.

NOWiGETit
NOWiGETit

I think the greater question here is not, "is he gay?" but "was he engaging in sexual behavior in a public restroom and evading arrest?"  The same would be asked of a straight man or woman in the same scenario.

Well, the current political convention is that only blacks can represent blacks, Hispanics represent Hispanics, Whites represent Whites and Others represent Others.

If Mr. Medrano is gay (and for the record I DO NOT CARE), then I guess he can only represent gay Hispanics.

Further, what does gay have to do with being a city council member?  Is there some double super secret password that the council member must know in order to get elected?

If anything, 14-1 has managed to bring us the worst of ward politics with none of the benefits and now it is perpetuating the racial division that it was supposed to end.

All I can say is that I plan on voting for the dead possum.  That way I will not be disappointed once it is in office.

@wineinabox how many straight people get caught in the restrooms? what do officers do to them but laugh? I was at The Den on McKinney Ave and there was this drunk white couple banging on the a/c unit of someones house, on the street, very visible. People in restrooms at clubs and bars. Do we ever hear about that? How about these politicians hiring prostitutes.

@crimjunkie

A predominately gay area should have a gay representative, just like blacks should have black representation, Latinos deserve Latino reps, and whites should have whites - it's a matter of empathetic diversity, much like is often practiced in education.

If they guy flies below the gaydar, then it's his responsibiility to let voters know which side of the fence he butters his bread on.

@NOWiGETit Exactly.  Do we really want to elect a City Council member who, when confronted by police, high tails it out the door?

As an aside, my recollection is that he actually got pretty far--- across Northwest Highway, back over behind the Tom Thumb-- so, at least we know he was/is in good physical condition!

@CarlSmith People have to do what you have to do to make money. If you wanna go there... these days.. aren't we stealing music, selling "bootleeg" movies. I'm sure you know about. Food stamps being sold, jacking the cable, using someone elses wifi, like damn.. was that necessary to say. You are going to tell him that? Was he Pancho? was he Hope? NO! I'm sure eveyone in your family CarlSmith was not an "Angel". You mad?

@ruddski @crimjunkie why then did Stonewall Democrats endorse Medrano when they could've endorsed an openly gay candidate Weisfeld or Franko?!?

@ruddski @crimjunkie by your reasoning, Stonewall Democrats should've endorsed an openly gay candidate: either Weisfeld or Franko. They did not, they endorsed Medrano. So what does this say?!?

@DavidA @CarlSmith You may do all those things you mention and think it's just fine. I don't. I guess if you have children you will raise them that it is okay to do what you have to do to make money even if it is illegal.  I disagree.  I merely pointed out the flaw in Mike LoVuolo's statement "he was raised by values set by his grandparents" by reminding him that Pancho and Hope's values included stealing cheese from the poor.  I guess that is one of your values too.  Some people have no morals.  I do.  No, not mad. I have no reason to be.

@barkingstar That the current leadership at Stonewall lets race trump the gay issues the group's mission should really be focused on.  In the Jasso/Griggs race, Jasso got the nod when Griggs has just as strong a record on gay rights.  It's sad to watch Stonewall drift so blatantly from their purpose.
