26-year-old London songstress FKA Twigs first piqued our interest with her pair of EPs comprising other-worldly shape-shifting sounds. Songs like "Ache" from "EP" or "How's That" from "EP2" set her airy entrancing vocals to shuddering bass and unsettling percussion. Aaliyah and Björk are two names that pop up often in comparison, the former vocally, and the latter sonically and visually especially after watching Twig's striking videos.

This has raised expectations of her full length debut to a fevered pitch, almost like the second coming. Most may find the album "difficult" at first, but Twigs' strong personality shines through, as do her sensitive vocals that show strength in restraint. In fact, restraint is the only extravagance on this musical adventure.

Amidst the stuttered beats, meandering synths and weird flourishes of "Lights On" is a lovely sultry futuristic R&B tune with the chorus "when I trust you, we can do it with the lights on" and some sprinklings of guitar. Lead-single "Two Weeks" is slinky with Twigs boasting "I can f**k you better than her" as she teases a chap in a sexless relationship, sounding seductive yet vulnerable at the same time against the swelling synth backdrop. This pair of songs are the only times "LP1" approaches any semblance of radio friendliness. Atypical structuring rules for much of the album.

And lust features prominently in her lyrics. "I could kiss you for hours" she coos on the minimal "Hours" which vocally winds down at the end like a tape slowing down. The hesitant "Pendulum" has glitchy beats which shut off and start unexpectedly with trippy synths and effects.

I'm honestly surprised that no reviews have acknowledged the standout beauty that is "Give Up". Easily infectious on the first listen, when majority of songs take a few listens to resonate with you. Highly recommended.

This record is everything but normal. Everything sounds clean production wise, lyrics are phenomenal, vocals are crisp. This is one of the best albums of 2014 hands down. FKA Twigs cultivated an amazing album that is captivating, intriguing and worth much more than one listen.

This album is a breath of fresh air. In a year where barely any albums have had any staying power, FKA Twigs' LP1 has. It's hard to describe what genre of music this woman makes, because it sounds so unique and original. The lyrics are very honest yet subtle and sound like they could fit onto a contemporary R&B song. Most of the lyrics deal with love and relationships, showcasing the ups (Hours) and the downs (Numbers, Give Up), and Twigs does an excellent job expressing her personal feelings through these lyrics. Sonically it does remind me of Björk at her most experimental (Vespertine, Medulla), with her use of vocal manipulation and electronic sounds. And best of all, it all works. Start to finish, this record is so captivating and will have you hooked. Maybe not on first listen, but once it hits you, you'll be begging for more. I know I sure am. AOTY so far

Interesting modern minimalist headphone R&B album. I say it's slightly overrated, but still a 4-star album (that is, it will probably be in my Top 40 albums of the year, but not my top 10). Twigs is like Bjork's younger sister who loves Laura Nyro, Kate Bush, and Laurie Anderson as much as she loves contemporaries Rhye, the Weeknd, and the xx. This isn't a quantum leap forward for soul/R&B music, but it's at least a nice little step forward.

This is gorgeous music. I love it. Her voice is sweet like sugar. The music is soulful and deep, yet light and floaty. I like the synth-y, electronic beats. I heard the song "water me" quite a while ago, and liked it without knowing who it was by. Recently I decided to listen to this album on spotify due to it's recent hype. This album is amazing.

Twigs' album LP1 took me to a place in music I didn't know existed last week. Her ethereal voice and bass/reverb heavy beats are pure ecstacy in my ears. I am a HUGE Beyonce fan, but LP1 puts Beyonce:The Visual Album to shame. A few stand out tracks are Two Weeks, where she makes debauchery sound smooth and sensual, Video Girl, where she addresses her recent past as a background dancer for UK artists, and Give Up, a track about not giving up on the one you love. Now, for the bad: I have 1 issue with this album.... it was not long enough. I can't just listen to 1 song, I listen to all 10 because they mesh so well and transition so smoothly. I live in Dallas, FKA Twigs will be here next month (Black Friday) and I have already purchased my ticket. My new favorite artist!
